Where Mauritius can fit
Mauritius can suit an entrepreneur who wants to live on the island, establish an operating business or manage qualifying international investments with an appropriate local structure. Its residence routes cover active business owners, employees, self-employed service providers, retirees and certain property purchasers. They solve different problems and carry different ongoing commitments.
For a business owner, the useful question is not simply the headline tax rate. It is whether the business can support the necessary people, management, contracts, banking and compliance, while meeting the owner’s family and travel needs. A lower company rate has little value if the original country continues to tax the company or the shareholder.
What changed in 2026
New investor occupation-permit applications use USD 100,000, professional applications use at least MUR 50,000 monthly basic salary, and the self-employed route requires USD 50,000 with specific local-client evidence. These are reflected in the enacted 2026 Economic and Financial Measures Act and current EDB guidance.
The Golden Visa is now a separate operational route: up to two years, with a commitment to invest USD 1m in qualifying activity within twelve months. For individuals, income from 1 July 2026 uses a 35% marginal band above MUR 12m. Older 20%-maximum and three-year personal-FSC summaries therefore need their dates checked.
Choose the permission that matches the activity
Start with what you will actually do each week. Active company ownership, local employment, your own services business, remote foreign work and retirement are distinct. For a family, check every dependent before committing to a property or school; the child-age wording and partner categories are not identical across routes.
| Intention | Route to investigate | Important commitment |
|---|---|---|
| Operate a company | Investor occupation permit | USD 100k; turnover and genuine business |
| Take qualifying local employment | Professional occupation permit | MUR 50k monthly basic salary; employer-led file |
| Provide your own services | Self-employed occupation permit | USD 50k; three letters of intent, including two local clients |
| Retire, aged 50+ | Retired residence | USD 24k yearly transfer requirement |
| Work remotely for an overseas business | Premium Visa | No entry into local labour market; special remittance rules |
| Invest USD 1m in qualifying sectors | Golden Visa | Investment within twelve months; no automatic passport |
| Buy qualifying residential property | Property-linked residence | Approved scheme and value exceeding USD 375k; retain ownership |
Tax, banking and implementation belong in the same plan
Personal foreign-income remittance rules do not automatically apply to a resident company. Working from Mauritius can create local-source income even when clients pay abroad. Corporate exemptions and foreign management must be supported by the facts, and banks will separately assess ownership, source of wealth and expected payments.
We can coordinate the structure, residence application, company, banking introductions and implementation sequence. Where an independent local or management provider is needed, their role and fees should be identified in the engagement. A sourced design should make clear why the route fits and what has to stay true after it is established.
Where to begin a reconnaissance visit
Use the business and school commute to choose a base before judging a location on holiday appeal. Port Louis and Ebene belong on a business-oriented shortlist; Grand Baie on the north coast and Flic en Flac or Tamarin in the west can be compared for a residential base. Le Morne is a landmark destination in the southwest, not a proxy for a central-office commute.
The warmer, humid season is generally November–April and the cooler, drier period June–September, with transition months between them. Coastal and plateau conditions differ. Test the intended home’s heat, drainage, access and connectivity during an ordinary working week rather than infer year-round conditions from a resort stay.
