Start with a household and business fact file
List everyone moving, passport nationalities, relationship evidence, children’s dates of birth, intended work, regulated professions and desired arrival date. Map the company’s owners, directors, team, contracts, intellectual property and banks. An applicant who will sell services locally needs a different analysis from someone who will only work remotely for an overseas business.
In parallel, resolve the country being left: residence ties, departure filing, exit taxes, pensions, company residence and asset transfers. Mauritius permission answers whether you may stay or work here; it does not decide those foreign consequences.
Choose a route before moving money
For an ordinary investor or self-employed file, current rules allow certified overseas evidence of funds and an undertaking to transfer the required sum within sixty days of permit issuance. That creates a banking dependency, not a reason to postpone bank preparation until day fifty-nine. Check transfer origin, account holder, currency and documentary trail.
The Golden Visa uses a different twelve-month investment undertaking and does not count acquisition of residential property under the EDB schemes toward its specified PRP investment route. A property purchase can support its own residence category, but the two commitments must not be conflated.
Documents that tend to control the schedule
Prepare passport and photographs, civil-status documents, business or employment evidence, financial statements and funds evidence, and the medical documents required by the selected route. Civil records outside English or French need certified translation under the OP guidelines. For children, resolve custody, adoption and absent-parent consent before filing.
Documents have different expiry periods. Medical evidence in the current OP checklist must generally be recent, and some tests or certification must follow the local process. Upload readable records and preserve originals for verification. A preliminary approval is not the final permit and does not override the expiry of your current entry permission.
A sequence with real milestones
The sequence below records official deadlines where available and leaves processing duration open where no reliable published service commitment has been verified. The ninety-day approval-in-principle period is a validity window to complete an OP file, not a ninety-day processing guarantee.
| Stage | Timing or dependency | What should be complete |
|---|---|---|
| Design and exit review | Before irreversible commitments | Route, tax position, family eligibility and budget |
| Bank and document preparation | Before filing / in parallel | Funds evidence, civil records, medical plan, business or contract |
| Online OP submission | When the file is ready | NELS application and non-refundable application fee |
| Approval in principle | Normally ninety-day completion validity for a new OP file | Outstanding conditions and local evidence |
| Originals and final permit | Authority appointment and decision | Valid entry status, originals and prescribed fee |
| Funds transfer | Within sixty days of issue where applicable | Certified local statement and EDB evidence |
| Operating calendar | From the first month | Tax, payroll, licence, turnover and renewal records |
Plan the family’s daily life separately
Shortlist housing around actual school and office journeys. A lease should identify permitted occupants, deposit, utilities and termination terms; keep accommodation evidence usable for the immigration and banking files. Private medical insurance is an explicit condition of Premium and Golden Visa guidance, and scope of cover should be checked for the intended family.
Dependent permission ordinarily ends no later than the sponsor’s permission. A spouse intending to work needs the relevant work entitlement rather than relying on dependent status. Do not assume OP family categories, property-linked categories and a visa’s immediate-family wording give identical rights.
After arrival, make the paper plan operational
Track physical presence against the July–June tax year and the rolling three-year 270-day test. Establish accounts with accurate tax-residence declarations, separate pre-arrival capital from new income, register the employer or business where needed and keep evidence of company decisions.
We can work through these dependencies with the advisory and implementation teams, including introductions to independent specialists. The useful handover is a clear set of responsibilities and dates, not a collection of certificates without an operating plan.
