Start with the licensed institution and the account purpose

Check the Bank of Mauritius list for the institution and permitted activity. A payment provider, bank and investment intermediary do not necessarily offer the same custody, deposit, transfer or credit services. Choose personal, operating-business and investment needs separately.

A residence permit, company incorporation or provider introduction does not guarantee an account. The bank makes its own customer and transaction assessment. Remote onboarding, minimum balances, available currencies and document certification vary by institution and case.

Personal accounts: identity is only part of the file

Expect to establish identity, address, occupation, tax residence and the origin of funds. The current SBM form asks for tax-residence information and authorises the bank’s verification of customer records. Prepare a coherent account of salary, dividends, business sale, inheritance or investments, backed by the documents that actually produced the wealth.

For an immigration transfer, the name on the sending account, receiving account and permit undertaking must be reconcilable. A large incoming transfer unsupported by prior statements or ownership evidence can delay the practical steps that the permit requires. Discuss the proposed funding before sending it.

Business accounts: explain the operation and the owners

The bank needs to understand the business activity, beneficial owners, directors and signatories, anticipated counterparties, transaction countries and payment volumes. Match that story to company documents, licences and contracts. A low-volume holding company and a high-volume merchant business should not be presented using the same generic business description.

MCB’s published SME portal describes a twenty-minute online application and a branch verification visit within a defined Mauritian-SME scope. It also says risk can lengthen the process. That is not a promise of an approved global-business account in twenty minutes. Ask the chosen bank which onboarding channel fits the actual entity.

Currency, transfers and tax classifications

Model the currency in which revenue is earned, costs are paid and savings are held. Obtain a tariff covering transfer charges, correspondent deductions, conversion spread, account fees and service eligibility. A foreign-currency account can avoid one conversion while leaving other charges and tax obligations unchanged.

For individuals, a Mauritius account receipt can be material under the foreign-income remittance rules or the special Premium/Golden Visa provisions. Preserve the difference between existing capital and new income. Do not rely on a bank’s acceptance of a payment as confirmation that it is tax-exempt.

An implementation checklist

Agree the account purpose and shortlist; confirm the bank’s current acceptance criteria; assemble identity, ownership and source evidence; pre-clear the initial funding; complete interviews or originals; test practical access and payments; then maintain the ongoing reporting and document-update calendar. The bank may seek further evidence at any stage.

We can help prepare the application and introduce suitable institutions or specialists as a standalone service or part of a wider relocation or structure. Acceptance and final terms remain with the bank.
