What does a Swiss salary leave you?

Separate income tax, employee deductions and employer costs. Start with an example, then replace the costs with your own figures.

Example costs are illustrative, not typical premiums or a quote. 2026 ordinary annual assessment; single, age 35, full-year and full-time, no dependants or church tax.

Your scenario

Calculations are city-specific. Other municipalities in the same canton can have different tax.

Who this calculation covers

A single 35-year-old employee, no dependants, employed full-time for the full year in one job, with the same Swiss municipality for residence and work. Gross cash salary is subject to Swiss social insurance.

No other income, taxable wealth, church affiliation, property, foreign allocation, benefits in kind, reimbursements or special expatriate treatment. The employee makes a positive ordinary occupational-pension contribution.

Apart from the allowances shown and an explicitly selected eligible Zug rent claim, this scenario claims no additional deductions: no commuting or meal expenses, pension buybacks, pillar 3a, donations, debt interest, education or medical deductions. It is a defined comparison, not advice to omit a deduction you can claim.

Annual ordinary tax is different from tax withheld from pay. This tool does not determine whether you qualify for ordinary assessment. Part-year moves, other households and cross-border work need separate calculations.

Employee costs and tax deductions

How the tax bases are calculated

Compare the researched cities.

The same salary and entered costs are used in each city. Actual pension, insurance and living costs can differ. Zug also needs its own rent and civic-membership assumptions, shown with that comparison.

Health insurance is usually a separate household bill. Tax already withheld is a payment towards the annual liability, not a second tax. Rent and other household spending remain to be paid; they are not subtracted from these amounts.

A negative tax balance represents payments above the estimated liability, not a guaranteed refund.
