The employer starts the application

The ordinary single-permit framework covers third-country nationals seeking to work in Belgium for more than 90 days. The employer submits through the one-stop portal to the competent region. Regional work authorization and federal residence authorization are assessed together but remain different decisions. An approval of only the employment component is not the whole permission.

Salary, qualifications, role and regional category must be established from current rules. Highly qualified, shortage, research and other categories are not interchangeable. This page does not invent one national salary threshold where regional or category differences matter. Shorter employment and exemptions can follow different procedures.

Work and residence evidence must agree

The Immigration Office lists a valid passport, applicable fee evidence, employment/means information, criminal record for adults, medical certificate and health insurance evidence among the residence documents. The regional authority adds the work-side requirements. Qualifications, contract and job description should match the selected category.

An incomplete file can delay the start of the legal decision period or become inadmissible. The official process allows 15 days to complete a regional request. Assemble translations and civil records before submission, and keep the employer available to answer questions. A planned start date should allow for the actual application dependencies.

What the four-month period actually means

The ordinary combined examination period begins when the region declares the application admissible. The region also has an initial 15-day transfer period to the Immigration Office. The four-month decision period can be extended for exceptional complexity. Silence has a prescribed legal effect within that process; it is not permission to begin work merely because four months passed since an informal inquiry.

An approved applicant abroad obtains the long-stay visa using the notified decision and passport. After entering Belgium, the worker applies for municipal registration and the card within 8 working days. The address check and document issuance add another operational stage.

Family applications need their own evidence

Spouses, qualifying partners and children are assessed through family rules. The consular single-permit family checklist describes a facilitated timing situation where the family unit existed before the permit grant and applications accompany or follow within the prescribed six-month visa window, subject to the conditions. Confirm its application with the responsible post.

Even when family files travel together, provide adequate housing, insurance, civil/custody records and qualifying sponsor means. Determine whether old or new rules apply from the sponsor’s authorization date. The new additional-dependent calculation includes relevant dependents already in Belgium; counting only newly arriving children can understate the required evidence.

Permission must continue after the first card

The official guidance calls for a limited single-permit renewal through the employer at the latest two months before the A card expires. A temporary document may preserve stay while a decision is pending without necessarily authorising work. The labour-market annotation and regional work decision matter.

Changing employer, role or work location requires an assessment before acting. Keep the actual job, salary and payroll consistent with permission. Residence continuity can also affect later settlement or nationality; a renewal diary should include every family member rather than only the principal worker.
