The sector and contract determine the starting point
Identify the competent joint committee from the employer’s activity before setting salary, working time, benefits and indexation. The general framework uses 38 effective hours a week or 38 on average over a reference period, with sector variations and permitted exceptions. A 40-hour schedule with compensatory days is different from assuming every employee simply works 40 hours with no further entitlement.
Contracts, work rules, rest periods, overtime and mandatory sector terms all need attention. The general daily limit has exceptions, and work beyond six hours requires the applicable break. Termination involves statutory rules and the individual contract/history; this bundle does not fabricate a universal severance multiplier or a complete 2026 notice table.
Budget leave and holiday pay correctly
The statutory framework includes ten public holidays. In a five-day working system, full annual holiday entitlement is generally twenty days, calculated with reference to qualifying work and equivalent days in the holiday-service year. A new arrival without the ordinary prior-year record needs an assessment of the additional/new-worker mechanisms; do not promise the same paid balance without checking.
Manual and nonmanual employees have different holiday-pay mechanics. That distinction also affects the social-contribution base. Sector or contract benefits can add to the statutory minimum. Use an annual total-cost schedule that recognises holiday pay and any binding bonus rather than multiplying one ordinary month by twelve.
The ordinary employee contribution is not the whole deduction
For an ordinary fully covered employee, the published components sum to 13.07%: pension 7.50%, health care 3.55%, sickness/disability benefits 1.15% and unemployment 0.87%. Contribution reductions such as the work bonus and special categories can change the actual result. The general employee percentage does not acquire the employer high-salary exemption.
Tax withholding and the special social-security contribution are additional questions. Household circumstances, taxable benefits, professional-expense relief and municipal taxation affect final annual net pay. The data below are a contribution foundation, not a validated Belgium salary calculator.
Employer charges and the 2026 high-salary relief
The ONSS instructions distinguish base employer contribution categories, wage moderation and special charges. The 19.88% base for specified tax-shift categories must not be presented as the all-in employer rate. Manual-worker holiday funding, sector contributions, accident insurance and benefit arrangements can add further cost.
The high-salary exemption uses actual qualifying quarterly remuneration with the same employer. The threshold is €86,700 from January throughJune 2026 and €88,434 from July 2026. It is not prorated into a generic annual cap for every contribution. The relief concerns prescribed basic employer and wage-moderation charges on the qualifying excess, with exclusions and interactions. Other charges remain to be checked.
| Item | 2026 foundation | Limit of this figure |
|---|---|---|
| Employee general contribution | 13.07% | Ordinary full coverage; reductions/special contributions separate. |
| Manual-worker contribution base | 108% of relevant gross | Holiday-pay mechanics; not a net-pay multiplier. |
| Employer basic charge | Category-dependent;19.88% for specified tax-shift groups | Wage moderation and other charges must be added. |
| High-salary employer threshold,Q 1/Q 2 | €86,700 per quarter | Specified charges only. |
| High-salary employer threshold,Q 3 onward | €88,434 per quarter | Employee contribution and all-in cost not capped by this rule. |
A foreign employer does not remove Belgian obligations
Where a person works in Belgium for a foreign group, test immigration permission, payroll, social coverage, posting and company-tax exposure separately. An employee who travels or works remotely in several countries needs a factual workday record and the applicable coordination or treaty analysis. The contractual employer’s address does not settle all of those questions.
A single-permit application must be aligned with the genuine employer, role and regional requirements. An owner acting independently cannot simply relabel the activity as employment to avoid the professional-card analysis. For an inquiry, provide salary and benefits, the work pattern, citizenship, current coverage and intended business role.
