Choose a route based on what you will actually do
| Applicant | Basis | Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| EU/EEA citizen | Qualifying work, self-employment, study or resources | Right of residence rather than an ordinary permit; substantiate the basis. |
| Nordic citizen | Separate Nordic framework | Do not apply the third-country founder process by default. |
| Non-EU employee | Genuine employment and qualifying terms | Ordinary salary threshold 90% median; exceptions and transitions apply. |
| Non-EU active business owner | Industry/management experience, credible business and funding | At least 51% ownership, actual responsibility and separate household resources. |
| Swiss citizen or EU long-term resident elsewhere | Own specific route | Do not equate with EU citizenship; check permission for stays over three months. |
A company registration is not permission to live in Sweden
The self-employed route assesses the proposed business, experience, ownership, customers, language and financial capacity. Incorporating an AB or purchasing property does not by itself complete the immigration test. A person intending merely to hold investments needs to identify an actual qualifying route rather than recast passive ownership as self-employment.
For an employee, the immigration salary floor is separate from Swedish income-tax brackets and the employer’s social contributions. The current SEK 34,470 ordinary monthly floor is dated to applications using the median published 16 June 2026; a salary must also meet industry or collective-agreement standards.
Family definitions differ between routes
The self-employed route lists spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners and children under 18. The ordinary employee family guidance has an under 21 unmarried child category with possible dependency cases aged 21 or over. The EU framework separately includes dependent older children and parents under its conditions. Do not use one generic family age for Sweden.
From 1 October 2026 the worker-family maintenance review also applies to renewals, and certain family income may be counted. Family of ICT/Blue Card holders staying at most one year face comprehensive health insurance requirements. One agency family page still shows 2025 living-cost amounts; those are not presented here as verified 2026 figures.
Keep permanent status and citizenship as separate checkpoints
EU citizens can acquire permanent right of residence after five years of qualifying residence. Third-country permit extensions and permanent status depend on the permit category and ongoing requirements. Current self-employed extension guidance discusses permanent permit assessment after at least two years of running the business with conditions met.
The agency’s July 2026 announcement about permanent permit exemptions for citizenship uses broad wording, while work/self-employed route pages retain route-specific permanent permit provisions. This guide does not promise an automatic permanent permit after two years or assert that all categories have been abolished. Confirm the current law and route before making a permanent status application.
Build the route and tax plan together
For a founder, the business plan should also explain where the owner works, who hires staff, which entity contracts and how the household will be funded. Immigration, company tax and personal residence examine related facts for different purposes. An inconsistent file can create avoidable problems at each stage.
Start with citizenships, household members, the actual business and expected work. We can help identify the suitable cross-border review and implementation work, and confirm which local immigration tasks are included before engagement.
