The applicant must actually run the business
This route is for a non-EU/EEA person who will run a business in Sweden with relevant experience and real responsibility. The current agency guidance requires ownership of at least 51%. Evidence should explain both the applicant’s experience in the industry and their ability to manage the proposed operation.
The agency expects relevant Swedish or English ability and established customer contacts or networks. Where the operation involves substantial contact with Swedish customers or suppliers, English alone may not meet the language expectation. A passive shareholding, a company registration or a property purchase is not a substitute for the active business assessed by this route.
Separate household maintenance from the business budget
The published maintenance requirement is SEK 200,000 for the applicant for the specified two-year period, with SEK 100,000 for an accompanying spouse or partner and SEK 50,000 for each accompanying child. These are resources for living, not government fees or payments to purchase residence.
The applicant also needs their own funds for the business’s anticipated costs, investment and any purchase price. The agency makes a financial assessment of the business plan. Loans are not normally accepted for this business-funding test. Show how the money is held and available; the form requests bank statements covering the last three months.
Do not present the same balance as both fully available household maintenance and fully committed acquisition capital without explaining how both requirements will be met. A useful financial schedule separates family living funds, the purchase or investment, opening costs and the operating cash needed before customers pay.
| Requirement | Published amount | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Principal household maintenance | SEK 200,000 | For the specified two-year period. |
| Accompanying partner | SEK 100,000 additional | Relationship and route conditions also apply. |
| Accompanying child | SEK 50,000 additional | The self-employed child category is under 18. |
| Business costs and capital | Based on the actual plan | Separate from household maintenance; supported by available own funds. |
Government application fees
These charges are separate from living funds, business capital and professional fees. Japanese citizens are exempt from the application fee. A refusal does not entitle the applicant to a refund. Confirm the charge for each household member before filing.
| Applicant | Government fee | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | SEK 2,000 | Self-employed permit application. |
| Adult family member | SEK 1,500 | For each accompanying adult application. |
| Child | SEK 750 | For each child application. |
| Japanese citizens | Exempt | The agency exempts Japanese citizens from the application fee. |
Make the plan verifiable
Explain what the business will sell, who will buy it, where it will operate and what costs arise. Support the forecast with actual customer and supplier contacts, contracts where available, premises arrangements and relevant market evidence. The application should read as a plan the owner can carry out, not a sales brochure for a company purchase.
The agency’s document list includes passport copies, ownership and registration evidence, business and funding documents, and experience or qualification records. Where a business already exists, the two most recent annual accounts and current-year financial information help establish what is being acquired or continued. A purchase also needs the agreement and evidence of payment where applicable.
Connect the applicant’s qualifications and experience to the proposed work. Documents outside Swedish or English need the required translations alongside the originals. Review names, ownership percentages and financial totals across the file so that the supporting documents describe one consistent arrangement.
Check each family member under this route
Spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners and children under 18 can fall within the self-employed accompanying-family category. Prove the relationship and provide custody or consent documentation where relevant. A shared future plan is not necessarily evidence of an established cohabiting relationship.
The additional maintenance amounts are not the only family conditions. Passport validity, the relationship and the child’s age can affect the application. The agency states that adult family members and children who will turn at least 16 during the current year may work if granted the relevant family permission. Review renewal rules when a child approaches adulthood rather than assuming the initial age determines every future application.
Apply from the correct location
First applications normally need to be made from outside Sweden, subject to defined exceptions for people holding particular existing permissions. Follow the agency’s instructions about the selected embassy or consulate, passport presentation and any interview. Digital passport checks are used only when offered for the case; the photograph, fingerprints and residence card are separate procedural steps.
An initial permit can be granted for up to two years and cannot outlast the passport. The agency’s waiting-time statistics are historical, and it may lack enough complete applications to provide a useful estimate. A percentile for incomplete cases is not a promise for a new file. Avoid making irreversible travel or business commitments that depend on an assumed decision date.
Keep the evidence from the first month
Maintain bookkeeping, pay the required taxes and retain evidence of real commercial activity. The ownership and management actually exercised should match the approved plan. An extension depends on continuing eligibility and results; resubmitting the original forecast alone does not establish that the business has operated as described.
The current extension page includes continued-operation and permanent-permit assessments, but the relevant conditions must be checked when applying. A properly scoped engagement can connect immigration coordination with company registration, tax, banking and ongoing administration. It should identify the professionals involved, the documents to be delivered and who remains responsible for each filing.
