Residence starts with your life, not your bank account

Sweden applies worldwide taxation to a person who is domiciled there, regularly stays there or retains significant connections after previously living there. These are alternative tests. The Tax Agency describes a regular stay as six consecutive months or more; brief trips abroad do not necessarily interrupt it. A person can therefore enter the tax system before qualifying for the one-year population-registration process.

Build a dated record of where you live, work and travel, the homes available to you and where your spouse and children live. Tax treaty residence may allocate taxing rights differently from domestic residence, but it does not remove the need to disclose income and claim the applicable relief. A foreign company or foreign account changes neither the owner’s residence nor the income’s character.

Salary and business income have national and local layers

Ordinary earned income is subject to municipal and regional income tax, with a further national 20% charge above SEK 643,000 of taxable earned income in 2026. This threshold is after the relevant basic allowance; it is not a universal gross-salary threshold. Age, deductions and credits also affect the final liability. A payroll withholding table is a collection method, not a flat final rate.

Stockholm municipality’s 2026 combined rate is 30.55%: 18.22% municipal and 12.33% regional. Burial fees and any religious-community fee are separate. Another municipality can produce a different result. The employee’s residence municipality must therefore be identified before comparing jobs or budgeting a move.

Employment benefits and pension need their own records

Classify cash salary, bonuses, equity compensation and non-cash benefits before calculating tax. An option or share award can have employment-income and later capital-gain consequences at different events. Keep grant, vesting, exercise and disposal evidence, together with the countries in which the work was performed. An employer’s foreign location does not establish where the underlying work was done.

Foreign pension receipts require separate review of the pension type and the applicable treaty. The Tax Agency can calculate special preliminary tax for a foreign pension rather than relying on a Swedish payer to withhold everything. Send the gross pension amount, source-country tax and benefit documents into the forecast; do not budget from the net bank deposit alone.

Asset cost basis on arrival

For ordinary private investments, Sweden's capital-gains rules start with acquisition cost, not the value when you become resident. Gifts and inheritance normally preserve the previous owner's tax position. Separate business tax-entry provisions can produce different values.

Illustration only: assume an ordinary taxable private holding, a correctly established Swedish-currency acquisition cost of 100,000, an arrival value of 180,000 and net sale proceeds of 220,000. With no special rule or treaty relief, the historical-cost gain is 120,000, not the 40,000 increase after arrival. This is a basis illustration, not a tax estimate.

Private capital-income rules and separate business-entry rules checked against the official consolidated Income Tax Act on 13 October 2026.

  • The classification covers ordinary private assets under the capital-income rules. It does not treat business tax entry, a treaty exception or a change of investment-account regime as an automatic private-portfolio reset.
  • Chapter 44 sections 13–14 define the gain and acquisition-cost basis. The conclusion for pre-arrival purchases follows that ordinary calculation; it is not a claim that the Act expressly rules out every possible arrival exception.
  • Chapter 20a can apply to an individual's business as well as a company. Its foreign exit-tax recognition rule requires a qualifying business transfer and an EEA state or an applicable tax treaty with information exchange.
  • Foreign-currency calculations, foreign-tax relief and the origin-country treaty need separate review. A foreign departure-tax bill alone should not be treated as proof of a new Swedish private-asset basis.
Asset or situationStarting value and treatment
Purchased shares and ordinary fund unitsUse the applicable acquisition-cost rules. Chapter 48 normally averages the basis of holdings of the same kind and class; foreign funds must first be classified under Swedish law.
Listed participation rightsA statutory alternative can set basis at 20% of net disposal proceeds for eligible listed participation rights. It excludes specified instruments and is not an arrival-date valuation.
Private real estateThe general acquisition-cost and improvement-cost framework applies together with chapter 45's property rules. Arrival value does not replace purchase documents under that ordinary calculation.
Shares in your own businessSeparate the individual's share basis from the company's asset basis. Closely held-company and restructuring rules require additional review; moving the owner is not itself a chapter 20a transfer of the company’s assets.
Gifts and inheritanceChapter 44 section 21 generally puts the recipient into the previous owner's tax position. Obtain the donor's or deceased owner's purchase history; do not substitute a probate value automatically.
Assets entering Swedish business taxationChapter 20a distinguishes inventory, depreciable assets and other business assets. Section 7 can recognize a qualifying foreign exit-tax amount intended to equal market value, subject to its conditions.

Which value will Sweden use when you sell?

Make the acquisition history part of the relocation plan. Under the ordinary private capital-gains calculation, the important starting point is what the asset cost, with the adjustments allowed for that asset. The value on the day you moved is useful evidence, but it is not automatically your Swedish tax basis.

This can leave pre-move appreciation inside a later Swedish gain. A tax return therefore needs more than the broker balance on arrival: it needs the underlying transactions, corporate actions and, where relevant, the previous owner's records.

  • Record the date Swedish tax residence starts and the treaty residence position.
  • Keep an arrival valuation as supporting evidence without treating it as an election or an automatic basis change.
  • Identify any foreign exit tax separately, then examine whether a Swedish domestic rule, treaty provision or credit actually addresses it.

Shares and fund unitsChapter 44 acquisition cost and chapter 48's applicable averaging rules. Eligible listed participation rights may use the 20% alternative; not every instrument qualifies.Trade confirmations, fees, share splits, rights issues and fund classification.

Gift or inheritanceThe recipient generally succeeds to the previous owner's tax position under chapter 44 section 21.Original purchase evidence across the ownership chain, not just probate or gift-date value.

When a business enters Swedish taxation

Chapter 20a is a different regime. It can apply when the income of an individual’s or a company’s business first enters Swedish taxation, when treaty exemption ends, or in other specified transfers. It should not be used to promise a market-value reset for a private investment account.

Even within chapter 20a, the entry amount is not uniformly market value.

For an entrepreneur, the first task is to identify what is actually moving: the individual, a business, or specified business assets. That determines whether the private capital rules, chapter 20a or another regime is relevant.

Business assetOrdinary chapter 20a entry calculation
Inventory, work in progress and trade receivablesGenerally the lower of acquisition value and net realizable value; section 3 contains additional merger-specific rules.
Depreciable equipment, buildings and land improvementsAcquisition and improvement cost reduced by statutory calculated depreciation; capped at market value and floored at zero.
Other business assetsAcquisition and improvement cost, or market value if lower.
Qualifying foreign exit-tax amountSection 7 can substitute an amount intended to equal market value that was included in foreign taxation because of the transfer. The other state must satisfy the EEA or applicable information-exchange-treaty condition.

Interest, dividends and disposals are not one single tax regime

The ordinary capital-income rate is 30%. It is relevant to interest and ordinary dividends, but unlisted and qualifying closely held shares have special treatment. For shares, reconstruct the acquisition cost and any corporate actions before a sale. Currency movements can also affect the Swedish-krona calculation; a gain measured in dollars is not necessarily the gain measured for the Swedish return.

A private investment, a shareholding in a business you work in and an asset used in a trading business require different classification. The guide’s capital-gains map marks Sweden as having taxation of private investment gains. It does not claim that every gain is taxed at 30%, every loss is fully deductible or an investment account’s foreign label is recognised.

The 2026 owner-manager rules change dividend planning

The 3:12 system divides qualifying shareholder income between capital and earned-income treatment. The 2026 rules replace the old choice of annual methods with a revised allowance calculation. The base amount is four prior-year income base amounts: SEK 322,400 for all shares in a company, allocated by ownership and subject to a personal ceiling across relevant holdings.

The wage-based component is generally 50% of the owner’s share of qualifying wage costs after a SEK 644,800 deduction for 2026. It cannot exceed 50 times the owner’s or a related person’s qualifying cash remuneration. Ownership dates, group subsidiaries and prior-year payroll matter. Do not treat the basic amount as an unconditional 20% dividend entitlement for every company owner.

Before choosing salary versus dividends, collect the share register, prior K10 returns, carried-forward allowance and payroll history. The corporate tax paid by the company is a separate layer. A move, share exchange or change in activity can also affect qualification periods and departure taxation.

Keep investment accounts and crypto distinct

For 2026 an ISK uses a 3.55% imputed-income percentage and 30% capital tax, giving 1.065% of the relevant capital base above the available tax-free level. The SEK 300,000 level is shared across qualifying ISK, capital-insurance and PEPP savings; it is not granted again for every account. This is an annual account regime, not a tax only on realised gains.

Ordinary private crypto disposals use the average-cost method in SEK. Gains are taxed at 30%; losses are deductible to 70%, so equal gross gains and losses need not cancel. Paying for goods with crypto or exchanging one crypto asset for another can be a disposal. Retain transaction exports and wallet-transfer reconciliations; staking, mining and business activity need separate classification.

A foreign tax bill is not automatically a full Swedish credit

Foreign income can be exempt under a treaty or specific domestic rule, or remain taxable with a credit. The credit calculation is limited by the Swedish tax on the relevant foreign income and by the amount the source country may charge under the treaty. Tax withheld above a treaty rate may need to be reclaimed from the source country.

Automatic credit information for reported dividends does not establish that every foreign income item has been included. Check the final calculation against gross receipts, foreign tax documents and other foreign income. Carry-forward relief has conditions and time limits. Record any later foreign refund because it can change the Swedish credit already granted.

Employee pension and employer contributions are different amounts

The 2026 general employee pension contribution is 7% of the relevant earned-income base, capped at SEK 47,100. A corresponding 100% tax reduction applies subject to the available taxes against which the credit can be used. It would be misleading to subtract 7% again as an ordinary uncapped employee payroll charge after a tax result that already accounts for the credit.

The normal employer contribution is 31.42% of the contribution base, with age, special relief and international social-security exceptions. The employee pension-benefit ceiling is not a general cap on employer contributions. Cross-border workers need the applicable social-insurance determination; an A1 certificate can establish which system applies without settling income-tax residence.

Foreign-expert relief requires a decision and a timely application

Qualifying foreign employees can obtain relief that excludes 25% of covered remuneration from the ordinary tax base, with certain specified reimbursements receiving separate treatment. The ordinary current period can extend to seven years from the start of the Swedish stay. It is tied to the employer named in the decision, not an exemption for all worldwide income.

The applicant must satisfy the baseline conditions, including no Swedish citizenship, no relevant Swedish residence/stay in the preceding five calendar years and an intended stay of no more than seven years. Qualification can be through duties/expertise or remuneration. For work starting in 2026 the salary route requires monthly remuneration above SEK 88,800; the authority specifies at least SEK 88,801. The application must reach the Board within three months of starting work.

A founder should not assume that ownership, a high annual bonus or a foreign employment contract settles eligibility. Review the Swedish employer/establishment condition and the agreed monthly remuneration before the first workday.

CFC rules and departure planning matter to the same owner

A Swedish taxable individual can face current attribution of low-taxed foreign-company income without a dividend. The CFC ownership test is not simply majority control:25% capital or votes, counting connected persons and relevant indirect holdings, can be sufficient. The statutory low-tax calculation, country-list exceptions and genuine EEA establishment rules must then be applied.

On departure, first test whether substantial connections keep worldwide liability alive. A separate ten-year rule can preserve taxing rights over specified later share disposals after limited liability begins. Some deferred share-exchange gains have additional departure triggers. These are different from a general deemed sale of every private asset on the moving date.

Records to keep before you move

Before moving, retain actual acquisition costs, corporate actions, gift/inheritance history, option compensation and contemporaneous valuations. Obtain an asset-specific conclusion, including the departing country’s exit tax and any treaty interaction, before selling. A valuation is useful evidence; it is not itself a Swedish tax election.

Prepare a return that explains the whole year

Use the calendar-year income record to reconcile employer reporting, investment disposals, foreign receipts and credits. A prefilled return is not proof that overseas income or crypto transactions were captured. Keep gross values and tax paid separately and retain SEK conversion calculations.

For a move or restructuring inquiry, the useful starting file is a residence/travel chronology, entity chart, current accounts, owner remuneration, asset schedule and intended destination. We can then scope the cross-border analysis and implementation around the actual issues rather than recommend a country from a headline rate.
