A basic account right has conditions and limits

Finansinspektionen explains that EEA-resident consumers have a right to a payment account with basic functions. Identification and anti-money-laundering requirements still apply, and the regulator identifies grounds on which an account can be refused. A record of non-payment alone is not a sufficient reason to refuse the basic account.

This does not amount to an automatic loan approval, a guaranteed corporate onboarding date or a right to every optional digital or merchant service. Ask the institution which identification documents it accepts and how the application will proceed if a Swedish electronic identity is not yet available. Keep the application and any written reason for refusal.

The bank certificate can be a company-formation dependency

For a cash-funded Swedish limited company, the public business portal directs the founder to a bank for the company account and electronic bank certificate. The ordinary minimum share capital is SEK 25,000. That is company capital, not an account-opening fee or an immigration investment price.

Coordinate the intended name, founders, ownership and capital payment with the bank before assuming registration is complete. F-tax, VAT and employer registrations are further steps. A business requiring regulated permissions should resolve those requirements as part of the operating plan.

The 2026 guarantee is per depositor and institution

The Swedish deposit-guarantee limit is SEK 1,150,000 from 1 January 2026, normally covering eligible principal and accrued interest per depositor per institution. Several accounts at the same institution share the limit. Check the legal institution and the account type in the Debt Office register; different brand names are not necessarily separate protection.

Certain temporary high balances associated with specified life events may receive additional protection subject to evidence and conditions. Foreign branches can fall under different arrangements. Securities, investment performance and a payment service’s safeguarded funds should not be described as ordinary guaranteed bank deposits without confirming the product and legal scheme.

Keep payment continuity through the move

Maintain a functioning payment method while the new account is assessed. Confirm the receiving-account details directly, the currency conversion method, transfer limits and the evidence requested for a large incoming amount. Test a modest transfer before making the account critical to rent, payroll or tax deadlines.

For an internationally active company, document who approves payments and how access is controlled. Reconcile each account to the bookkeeping and update the bank when ownership, tax residence or business activity changes. This practical work should be designed alongside the structure rather than treated as a final administrative afterthought.

Give the team enough detail to assess suitability

An initial banking inquiry should identify the applicant, citizenships and tax residence, company jurisdiction, activity, expected monthly flows, main currencies and counterpart countries. Identify payment processing, cards and custody as separate requirements. Do not send passwords or online-banking credentials.

We can assess the requirements and coordinate suitable applications within an agreed scope. The bank makes its own onboarding decision. A good file makes the actual activity understandable; it cannot turn an unsuitable business into a guaranteed acceptance.
