Moving to Sweden: the implementation sequence
Stages follow legal and practical dependencies. Agency processing statistics are retrospective, not a guaranteed completion schedule.
01Set the work, tax and family routeBefore committing to the move
Map the nationality and work rights of each household member. Review the owner’s companies, compensation and investment history against the proposed Swedish start date.
Documents & evidence
- Passports and current permissions
- Entity chart and work calendar
- Marriage, birth and custody records
02Prepare permission and fundingBefore the first application
Choose the correct EU, employment or self-employed path. For a founder, assemble business ownership, budget, customers, experience and the separate household maintenance evidence.
Documents & evidence
- Business plan and bank statements
- Employment terms where applicable
- Certified translations
- Business registration does not grant immigration permission.
03Secure an address and enter lawfullyAfter the relevant permission or right is established
04Register the household and tax positionOn arrival; use current Skatteverket identity-check instructions
Notify the population register if the planned stay meets the requirements. Complete the in-person identity check. Start the applicable payroll and company registrations without assuming the personal number resolves them.
Documents & evidence
- Identity check appointment
- Actual Swedish address
- Work, study or self-sufficiency evidence
05Make health, banking and school arrangements workAs eligibility and documentation become available
Provide the required information to Försäkringskassan, select a Stockholm health centre if applicable and complete school placement. Present the bank with identity, source of funds and expected transactions.
Documents & evidence
- Health/insurance evidence
- School records
- Source of funds and tax residency details
06Review the first reporting cycleBefore the first relevant filing or permit expiry
Put the business and household on the same timeline
Before choosing a moving date, identify the activities you will perform from Sweden. An online business can still have people, management, sales and contracting functions in a real place. Prepare a list of companies, shareholdings, investment accounts and compensation events due around the move; a founder’s vesting or distribution date may be as important as the flight.
Run the departure-country analysis in parallel. A Swedish immigration permission says nothing about the old country’s exit tax or continuing residence. The Swedish arrival-basis classification remains an explicit research gap here: do not assume that a valuation on entry resets every private asset’s cost.
Nationality and work determine the permission route
EU/EEA citizens may rely on a qualifying right of residence through work, self-employment, study or sufficient resources rather than a Swedish residence permit. Nordic citizens have a distinct framework. Non-EU founders ordinarily need a self-employed permit; the company must be genuinely run by the applicant and the current route requires at least 51% ownership.
Employees instead need the appropriate work route. The ordinary current salary requirement is 90% of the median prevailing when applying, alongside collective-agreement or occupational conditions. The agency’s current figure from 16 June 2026 is SEK 34,470 monthly. Exceptions and transitions must be checked for the exact application; this figure is not the self-employed route’s maintenance test.
Plan for housing and bank onboarding to take different paths
Stockholm’s municipal housing queue allocates apartments primarily by accumulated queue time and landlord requirements. Registering does not supply an immediate home. Use a realistic temporary accommodation plan while you investigate long-term options; examine the authority to sublet, termination terms and what charges are included.
Keep funding accessible while the bank completes identification and source-of-funds checks. A right to a basic payment account has legal conditions and exceptions; it is not a guarantee of credit, merchant processing or all digital services on day one. The immigration maintenance file and the business working-capital file should remain distinguishable.
The initial file that makes a review useful
For the first inquiry, provide citizenships, current tax residence, intended arrival, family ages, current entity chart, business activity and where the team works. Indicate any pending investment sale, company sale, dividend or equity award. Those facts identify the questions worth solving before implementation.
The next stage can then be scoped around a deliverable: residence and exit review, international company arrangement, immigration coordination or specific banking work. The process below shows dependencies; it does not promise that every agency or bank will finish on the same timetable.
