Choose the life and operating model together
Finland can suit someone who wants a lasting European home, a qualified role or an actively run business. The decision needs a salary and investment analysis as well as an immigration application. The same move can bring a founder’s overseas company, investments and family finances into several Finnish rules at once.
Start with three separate questions: can you lawfully live and work here, what will Finland tax, and can the household function in the chosen city throughout the year? Resolve these before selling assets or committing to a long lease.

How to compare locations
Evaluate the exact home-to-work and home-to-airport journey in winter as well as summer. Helsinki-area access to the principal international gateway and the regional airports’ seasonal networks create different travel patterns. A city with an airport does not necessarily provide the year-round nonstop route you need.
| Location shortlist | Planning question | Airport to check |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa | Test a capital-region base against actual commuting and housing needs. | Helsinki Airport |
| Tampere | Compare an inland base with rail/road access and a smaller direct-flight network. | Tampere-Pirkkala |
| Turku | Evaluate a southwest/coastal base and routes via Nordic/Baltic hubs. | Turku |
| Oulu | Compare a northern base with winter travel and direct-route availability. | Oulu |
| Rovaniemi | Test the full seasonal cycle rather than a winter holiday alone. | Rovaniemi |

International connectivity is seasonal
Finavia’s summer/autumn 2026 list runs to 24 October. Its published winter list covers 25 October 2026–27 March 2027 and excludes charter flights. The examples below describe those published schedules, not guaranteed future operations. Check the airline’s dates and frequency before relying on a commute.
| Gateway | What the connection pattern means |
|---|---|
| Helsinki Airport (HEL) | Main international gateway; check the itinerary and operating dates directly. |
| Tampere-Pirkkala Airport (TMP) | Published winter list includes Riga and Málaga; direct networks are narrower than Helsinki. |
| Turku Airport (TKU) | Published winter list includes Gdańsk, Riga and Stockholm; distinguish direct routes from connections. |
| Oulu Airport (OUL) | Summer/autumn list includes Riga; published winter list shows domestic scheduled links. Seasonal international coverage changes. |
| Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) | Extensive published winter European network; do not assume the same routes operate year-round. |
| Vaasa Airport (VAA) | Published winter list includes Stockholm and Umeå alongside Helsinki. |
| Mariehamn Airport (MHQ) | Published winter list includes Stockholm as well as Helsinki and Turku; Åland rules require separate checking. |
The tax decisions to settle first
Prepare an inventory of wages, distributions, investments, pension rights and company control. Historical asset cost generally remains relevant after arrival; the specific Canada–Finland departure provision is a conditional treaty protection, not a general reset. An eligible key-employee wage regime is a separate question from the immigration route.
A residence route is not a citizenship purchase
The research library covers lawful paths whether or not Offshore Capitalist offers application support for them. Finland’s work, enterprise, study and family routes need their own eligibility review. Citizenship ordinarily follows qualifying residence or a specific parentage/declaration entitlement; purchasing a company or property is not a citizenship route described by Migri.
Build the move around a workable sequence
The useful result is a coordinated plan: permissions, the tax calendar, banking evidence and registrations in the order that your household and business need them. Identify which decisions are reversible and which transactions must wait for a settled analysis.
