Choose the account for the actual job
A household payment account, a company operating account and a securities account have different acceptance and documentation questions. Start with the expected currencies, countries, counterparties, volumes and ownership. The useful decision is whether the institution can support those activities after onboarding, not only whether an account number can be issued.
Personal banking and electronic identity
FIN-FSA’s review distinguishes a basic payment account from strong electronic identification. A lawfully resident EEA consumer’s basic-account rights do not mean every credit or investment product must be supplied. Banks still have identification and anti-money-laundering duties.
The regulator says absence of a Finnish personal identity code alone is not a statutory basis to refuse a basic payment account. Strong electronic-identification services have additional population-register requirements. Do not let “online banking,” “strong identification” and “an account” become one undefined promise.
Prepare a useful bank file
| Account need | Core file | Additional review |
|---|---|---|
| Personal payment account | Identity, address/residence circumstances and purpose | Explain income sources and expected international payments |
| Company operating account | Representation authority, entity and beneficial-owner information | Provide activity, counterparty, payment-volume and source-of-funds evidence |
| Foundation or other legal arrangement | Governing documents, powers and actual controlling persons | Acceptance and required documents depend on the legal form; a generic company checklist is insufficient |
| Brokerage / securities account | Account-holder identity, investment purpose and authority | A company may need a board decision and additional market/tax identifiers |
Remote opening: possible does not mean universal
Nordea describes corporate onboarding by phone or online for eligible representatives using accepted personal online access credentials. That is a conditional channel, not proof that an overseas founder with no Finnish credentials can complete every case remotely.
Confirm the identification method before planning travel or relying on a completion date. Ask which people must attend, what can be certified abroad, whether an accepted electronic identity is required and which supporting documents must be originals.
Banking and tax reporting must reconcile
An account location does not establish the owner’s tax residence or make its investment income exempt. Keep source-of-funds documents, tax-residence information and investment records consistent with the actual circumstances. If you change residence, review what the bank needs to update and preserve account access for later tax filings.
Before choosing an institution
Compare service scope and the actual contracting entity, not only a brand. Get the fee schedule and terms for foreign transfers, currency conversion, securities custody and authorised users. Check the applicable deposit-protection scheme directly for the legal entity; investment losses and payment-account balances are different issues.
- Check acceptance of the business sector and the countries involved before submitting the full file.
- Agree who supplies missing KYC evidence and how changes will be reported.
- Keep a realistic operating reserve while onboarding remains unresolved.
- Treat a bank’s published processing target as conditional rather than a guaranteed completion date.
