Before choosing a moving date

Put the immigration route, work start, family travel and tax-residence date on one timeline. A residence approval does not determine the tax date, and a Finnish identity code does not replace the permission to reside. Keep enough flexibility for identity appointments, document legalisation and any request for additional evidence.

The relocation sequence

StageWhenWhat to resolve
1. Establish the right to resideBefore relying on a work or long-stay planChoose national permit, EU registration or Nordic registration; family members may use different forms
2. Submit and identifyFollow the chosen route and appointment availabilityPay the relevant fee, complete identity verification and respond to evidence requests
3. Confirm travel and employment rightsBefore travel/work beginsCheck decision, card or applicable D-visa arrangements; a pending application is not a universal permission to work
4. Register personal and address detailsAfter arrival under the applicable procedureCheck the personal identity code, address and eligibility for a municipality of residence
5. Set up tax and coverageBefore payroll and as circumstances changeArrange tax card and assess Kela/social-insurance coverage separately
6. Complete banking and daily arrangementsOnce identity and supporting evidence are readyAccount access, housing, schooling and routine payments may have different prerequisites

Healthcare and benefits need their own decision

Kela assesses entitlement when someone moves or begins working in Finland; a residence permit alone is not a promise of every benefit. Document the source country’s coverage and any posting/cross-border arrangement. Include interim healthcare arrangements in the move budget until the applicable entitlement is clear.

Budget for the actual city and season

Compare rent, deposits, commuting, childcare, insurance, travel and tax-inclusive everyday spending. Finland’s winter varies materially between the southwest and Lapland. Visit the intended neighbourhood in a less convenient season and test ordinary journeys, rather than choose solely from summer photographs.

For frequent international travel, compare a direct flight with the full connecting itinerary, including the time needed to reach the airport. Recheck the winter schedule separately from the summer/autumn route list.

Employment terms beyond headline salary

The sector’s collective agreement can determine minimum pay and additional terms; Finland has no single statutory minimum wage. Ordinary working-time rules, holiday pay and sick/family leave affect the employment package. A founder hiring staff should compare the total employment budget with the employee’s net income, rather than use one contribution percentage for everything.
