A permit for a real expert role
The specialist route is for qualifying work requiring special expertise. In 2026 the published minimum gross monthly salary is EUR 3,937, excluding fringe benefits. The role and evidence of expertise matter alongside salary. Confirm the job before making the application.
The employment file
| Element | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Role | Describe the specialist tasks and why the applicant has the expertise |
| Compensation | Show qualifying cash salary and distinguish benefits/reimbursements |
| Qualifications | Supply degree or other accepted evidence of special expertise |
| Employer | Ensure the employment terms submitted by the employer match the applicant’s file |
| Duration | Migri describes a first specialist permit of up to two years, limited by the employment period where shorter |
Fees and timing
The 2026 first-permit fee is EUR 530 electronically or EUR 630 on paper. Extended-permit fees are separate. Current processing estimates depend on the application; any fast-track conditions must be satisfied rather than assumed from the occupation alone.
Your household and tax position
Family members use their own applications and evidence. The income, age and relationship conditions must be assessed for the actual household. A specialist permit does not automatically give access to Finland’s separate 25% key-employee tax regime.
Keep the two work routes distinct
The EU Blue Card also covers highly qualified employment, but its qualifications, exclusions and mobility framework have their own rules. Compare the conditions before choosing an application, particularly when work in another EU country is part of the plan.
