City at a glance
Choose between river-city life and the eastern work district
Turku is particularly worth comparing at the neighbourhood level. The Aura river and historic central districts offer one kind of daily life; Kupittaa and the developing Science Park area offer another, with education, research and employment locations grouped to the east. Neither is simply a substitute for the other.
The practical question is which trips you repeat. A household working near Kupittaa may gain more from a short daily journey than from a central river view. A home worker who uses the centre frequently may value walking access to errands, meetings and recreation. Start with three likely homes and plot a normal week from each.
Keep municipal boundaries visible when widening the search. Kaarina, Raisio and other nearby places can be part of the same everyday region but are not the City of Turku. Transport coverage does not establish a right to a particular school or the same local administration.
What may appeal
- Riverfront city life and a separate education and employment cluster around Kupittaa.
- Regional bus connections and a local international airport.
- A municipal newcomer housing-advice service and documented school-enrolment routes.
What to weigh up
- The international airport’s smaller and seasonal network can require a connection or travel via Helsinki.
- Old school addresses and pre-July 2025 bus information can mislead a housing search.
- Historic homes and hill locations require individual checks for condition, access and storage.

Areas that offer different compromises
Use this shortlist to plan visits. The questions in the last column are things to investigate at a property, not claims about every building or household in a district.
| Area | Why consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Centre and the Aura riverfront | A base for walking to city services, restaurants and cultural activity. | The difference between a river outlook and a quiet room; delivery access, storage and the late-evening street. |
| Kupittaa | A practical search around the station, employment cluster and education facilities. | Which side of the railway and main roads your work or school occupies; pedestrian crossings and construction. |
| Itäharju | A district connected with the eastward development of the Science Park. | Separate existing services from future plans; visit during working hours to understand current industrial and building activity. |
| Port Arthur / Portsa | Wooden-house character near the centre. | Building condition, heating arrangements, shared spaces and the actual accessibility of the entrance. |
| Kakola | Converted historic surroundings on the former prison hill. | Gradients, everyday grocery access and the walk with a stroller or luggage; a striking setting is not the same as a level route. |
| Student Village / Ylioppilaskylä area | A useful point of comparison for study-related households and nearby routes. | Whether a housing provider requires student eligibility, and how the same address works outside term-time activities. |

Schools & childcare
Use the 2026 school location, not an old relocation article
Turku International School’s basic education moved to Kupittaa at the beginning of 2026. The city gives Lemminkäisenkatu 30, with visitor access at Untamonkatu 2. A housing choice based on its former Varissuo location can therefore produce the wrong daily journey.
The international school has a separate application; a nearby home does not guarantee admission. For a child needing an ordinary local-school placement after moving, the city provides a pupil-notification route. Gather school reports and language/support information before contacting the education service. If you choose another school than the assigned local school, check the consequences for school-travel costs.
The city announced an international upper secondary school for 1 January 2027. As of this guide’s 14 October 2026 research date, that is a forthcoming option, not an already operating place your child can take immediately. Confirm the programme, application cycle and entry requirements for the child’s actual start year.
Health services are organised through Varha, the Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland. Identify the appropriate health station and establish entitlement; clarify any employer-provided care separately. A school application, a Finnish identity code and Kela coverage are different administrative matters.
Getting around
View the home as part of the daily journey
Turku provides free, confidential housing advice for newcomers. Use it when you need help understanding the rental process or resolving an early housing problem. Advice is distinct from an offer of a property; maintain an active search and a realistic temporary arrangement.
Read the lease and total charges, including the heating arrangement in an older wooden property. Check furniture, insurance and the handover inventory. A central flat may reduce travel needs, but it should still have the storage and workspace your household requires.
For a family, rehearse a school morning rather than relying on a district description. Carry normal bags and include the walk from the stop to the entrance. If a proposed home is in an area undergoing redevelopment, ask which works are already scheduled and which amenities are merely planned.
Before paying from abroad, establish the letting party’s authority and what happens if your move date changes. Keep the agreement, payment records and property condition photographs together. In an unfamiliar housing system, resolving an ambiguous clause beforehand is easier than arguing about it after a deposit or a shipment has committed you.
- Request the complete monthly cost rather than an advertised rent alone.
- Confirm the home’s municipality and the school application it supports.
- Check lift, stair, bicycle and stroller arrangements during the viewing.
- Agree key handover and a contact for urgent property problems.
Learn the current Föli network
Föli’s bus network changed substantially in July 2025. Use the current route planner and the timetable period that covers your journey; an old map can be actively misleading. The regular timetable checked for this guide runs from 10 August 2026 to 6 June 2027.
The airport–centre–harbour corridor uses lines 1/1A. The published 3/3A corridor connects Varissuo, Kupittaa station and the centre, while line 5 serves the Student Village–centre–Haarla corridor. These can help orient a housing search, but branches and individual departures must still be checked for the relevant date.
A Föli single ticket permits transfers for two hours. Follow the boarding and scanning instructions for your payment method; using an app, contactless card or a cash ticket is not identical in price or operation. For a frequent traveller, compare the actual ticket choices after you understand the weekly pattern.
A short straight-line distance across the map can conceal a detour to a crossing or a transfer. On a scouting visit, test the evening return and a weekend journey as well as the weekday commute. If school pickup would require two buses with a tight connection, factor that into the home decision.

Match the local network to the business
Turku’s Science Park area spans university locations, Kupittaa’s employment cluster and development toward Itäharju. For a business involving research partners or specialist staff, investigate the relevant organisations and premises directly. A city growth plan is not evidence that a particular facility or recruitment pipeline is already available.
International House resources can help with settlement and finding the relevant local service. The city’s international-student support explicitly welcomes students’ family members as well as students, but that service should not be treated as universal business support. Explain your status and objective so that you reach the right adviser.
Remote work does not remove the need to examine the move’s tax and company consequences. If you will direct a foreign business from Turku, agree how actual work, management and reporting fit the plan before the routine starts. We can connect that cross-border review with the practical implementation you need.

Airports & international connections
International access from TKU and through Helsinki
Turku Airport is a local international gateway with a selective route network, rather than a broad long-haul hub. Finavia’s seasonal lists show that the mix changes between summer and winter. Check whether your regular destination has a useful nonstop service or a realistic connection on the dates you travel.
Föli’s current timetable lists the airport on lines 1/1A via the centre. Calculate the journey from your actual home and check first and last departures against the flight. Budget separately for an early or late journey that requires a taxi.
Helsinki Airport is an alternative when the international itinerary is stronger there. VR describes a Turku–Helsinki Airport journey involving a change at Pasila. Use the live itinerary for the date; check the station your train actually serves and allow time for the transfer. A Helsinki flight is not a local-airport departure simply because the rail connection is possible.
If travel is central to your business, compare three representative trips: a short European meeting, a long-haul journey and a late return. Include the whole journey, missed-connection exposure and any hotel night. That gives a more useful connectivity measure than counting destinations on a map.

Climate & environment
See the river city outside the summer season
Turku’s southwestern setting still has a marked winter and a large seasonal change in light. Sea influence affects the arrival of cold weather; year-to-year conditions vary. Plan for wet, slippery conditions as well as cold, rather than assuming every winter outing involves dry snow.
For a riverfront or hill location, look at the everyday route after rain and in the evening. Ask where wet clothes, a bicycle and outdoor equipment would go at home. For summer, consider bedroom light and whether ventilation is adequate for your preferred sleeping conditions.
A useful visit includes one day around Kupittaa and another in the centre and western neighbourhoods. Buy groceries, try the bus and spend an evening locally. Return to the property shortlist with a realistic account of the journey, rather than adding more neighbourhoods without testing any of them.

- Kotona Living — Nana and Henri’s move to central Turku

In a December 2025 interview, Nana and Henri described moving from a detached house in Kaarina to a central Turku apartment earlier that year. With their children’s school and hobbies in town, they reported less time driving and more walking or cycling. They also gave up a large garden and adjusted to different storage. This is one established household’s experience, not evidence that central living is cheaper or right for every family.
