Agree the work before agreeing the start date

A Czech employment contract is not, by itself, permission for a third-country national to work. The Employee Card, EU Blue Card, work-permit or free-access category must fit the worker and role. Free access to the labour market does not automatically supply lawful residence. EU free-movement rules follow a different branch.

For a remote employee of a foreign business, review the employer’s Czech obligations as well as the worker’s residence route. Immigration permission, tax withholding, social-insurance coverage and corporate activity are four connected but distinct questions. Do not ask payroll to resolve them after the employee has already begun working.

Ordinary insured payroll: 2026 rates and ceilings

The ordinary employee social contribution is 7.1% and employer social contribution 24.8%. The 2026 annual social assessment ceiling is CZK 2,350,416. Ordinary health contributions total 13.5%, conventionally split 4.5% employee and 9% employer, and have no maximum assessment base. Applicable minimum bases, discounts and special categories can change the calculation.

The social ceiling is not a cap on income tax, health insurance or total employer cost. Risk-category work can have higher employer social rates and a separate mandatory retirement-saving contribution under the 2026 rules. Determine the actual job category instead of applying one percentage to every employer.

Contract costs extend beyond contributions

The 2026 ordinary minimum wage is CZK 22,400 monthly for the relevant full-time basis. Standard working time is generally 40 hours per week, with shorter statutory schedules for some work patterns. The basic annual leave entitlement is at least four weeks, calculated under the Labour Code’s hours-based framework.

Budget paid leave, public holidays, occupational health and safety, sickness-related obligations, equipment and any contractual benefits. These are not all additional payroll tax rates, but they affect the economic cost of a role. A service contract labelled freelance does not settle whether the actual relationship is dependent employment.

Use current probation and notice rules

For probation agreed under the rules effective from 1 June 2025, the maximum is four months for ordinary employees and eight months for managers, also limited to half a fixed-term contract’s duration. An existing contract does not automatically expand because the legal maximum increased.

The notice period generally begins on delivery under the amended framework rather than automatically at the start of the following month. Grounds, exceptions and transitional or agreed contractual wording matter. Have termination documentation checked before acting; a rough employer-cost model is not a termination calculation.

A reliable monthly workflow

The unified monthly employer report applies from April 2026 and is generally submitted electronically from the 1st to 20th day of the following month. Set up the applicable employer and employee records with CSSZ, the relevant health insurer and payroll administration. Contributions and tax advances still need their own correct remittance.

For an international hire, keep the signed role, place-of-work agreement, right-to-work evidence, insurance-system determination, tax declaration, compensation details and change log together. If the person spends substantial time abroad, review travel before it becomes a second-country compliance issue.
