The process, step by step
The order matters: eligibility and documents come before committing to a move. Authority periods are not an end-to-end service promise.
01Choose the household routeBefore deposits or a start date
Confirm the principal route and a lawful category for each accompanying person. Check consular jurisdiction and appointment or quota constraints.
Documents & evidence
- Passports
- Current permits
- Family relationships and ages
- Work or business plan
- Assuming a visitor can always switch status locally
02Resolve tax and operating consequencesBefore moving management or selling assets
Review both countries, expected work location, investment disposals, payroll and the foreign company’s decisions. Keep evidence of when the facts change.
Documents & evidence
- Income/assets inventory
- Company structure
- Travel and home records
- Treating residence permission as a tax exemption
03Assemble evidence and submitPreparation plus the route-specific authority period
Secure accepted accommodation, legalised/translated civil and qualification records, funds and insurance evidence. Submit at the correct office and respond to requests.
Documents & evidence
- Application
- Housing evidence
- Criminal records when required
- Qualification and support evidence
- Expired documents
- Counting processing from first inquiry rather than admissible filing
04Complete arrival formalitiesImmediately after entry, according to the permit instructions
Business-visa holders generally register with Foreign Police within 3 working days unless the accommodation provider has fulfilled the relevant duty; card applicants follow Interior Ministry registration/biometrics instructions. Confirm the exact instruction for your document.
Documents & evidence
- Passport/visa
- Accommodation
- Insurance
- Appointment confirmation
- Using one route’s arrival deadline for every status
05Establish the ongoing routineFirst months and before each expiry
Arrange applicable health and payroll registration, a usable account and school arrangements. Check whether the adaptation/integration course applies within one year of card collection, including exemptions. Keep a renewal and travel log.
Documents & evidence
- Insurance proof
- Bank/tax records
- School records
- Permit diary
- Assuming a lease or account extends a permit
Decide what is moving with you
A relocation can involve several different things: a household, an employment contract, a founder’s management role, a securities portfolio and sometimes the operating business itself. Write down which of these changes and when. A plan that looks good for the principal applicant can still fail if a spouse cannot work or an adult child does not meet the family definition.
The first useful deliverable is a calendar with dependencies. Document preparation comes before filing; filing location depends on nationality and current lawful residence; travel depends on an approval and entry instructions. Housing and school commitments should reflect those dependencies rather than a promised moving date.
Make transaction decisions before they become irreversible
Collect an opening asset register with purchase dates and original costs before leaving your current country. Czech holding-period exemptions may matter for a future disposal, but they do not by themselves cancel a foreign departure charge. Keep departure and arrival valuations where relevant, and have each country’s treatment reconciled.
For a founder, record who will approve contracts and budgets after the move. If a foreign business is meant to remain managed abroad, that must reflect real authority and conduct. The company should not keep an old tax-residence narrative while all its important decisions move to a Czech home office.
Make the practical file fit the legal one
Confirm that the landlord or accommodation provider will issue the evidence required for your particular application. Ask separately about the deposit, service advances, reconciliation, termination and whether the premises can be used for the proposed business activity. The cheapest short stay may not solve the documentation needed for long-term residence.
Healthcare requires a person-by-person check. Public eligibility, employer coverage and commercial insurance can have different start dates. Keep cover continuous during travel and while the residence document is being completed. Use the official route instructions for the required insurance product rather than a generic travel-policy comparison.
A move is complete when the recurring tasks work
Once admitted, verify the actual right to start work, collect the required card and diarise renewal, reporting and integration duties. Ensure that the employer and advisers know the real arrival and work-start dates. Keep access to foreign tax and bank records while accounts or addresses are changing.
We can help turn those separate workstreams into an agreed implementation plan. Include your intended first workday, family school needs and major upcoming transactions in the inquiry so that the sequence can be assessed before money is committed.
