Eligibility & suitability
Who can qualify
- Qualifying high-skilled Czech role, salary and recognised qualification/skills.
- Applicant who can file at the legally competent post or eligible in-country office.
Restrictions & unsuitable cases
- A foreign remote job alone.
- Unrestricted work before permission is effective.
- Consular application without an applicable exception where any citizenship is Russian or Belarusian, including dual nationality. This does not classify every in-country application as prohibited.

A concrete qualifying job comes first
The Blue Card is for highly qualified employment, not simply an applicant with a degree or substantial savings. The job, credentials and contract have to fit. The ordinary education route requires qualifying higher vocational or university study of at least three years; specified occupations can instead use recognised higher professional skills. Regulated professions require the relevant recognition.
The contract or qualifying future contract must cover at least six months and the statutory weekly working time. Salary must reach 1.5 times the announced reference annual wage. For 1 May 2026–30 April 2027, that reference is CZK 590,580: the required annual gross salary is CZK 885,870, equivalent to CZK 73,822.50 monthly. This date range matters for offers signed around the next annual update.
Russian or Belarusian citizenship, including dual nationality, requires a qualifying consular exception before a visa/residence application can be accepted. See the residency guide for the application-specific exceptions.
An earlier family route still requires evidence
A valid Blue Card is one of the sponsor categories that avoids the ordinary 15-month or Employee Card 6-month sponsor waiting period. Each family member nevertheless needs the correct application and relationship/support evidence. Ordinary minor children and adult medically dependent children must not be confused with a general student-dependent-under 26 rule.
The authority describes a 90-day shortened family-reunification procedure for a Blue Card holder’s family. It is a procedural period, not a guarantee that every family member will arrive on the principal’s first working day. Plan accommodations and school entry with the actual application sequence.
Government charges and household costs
| Cost | Scope |
|---|---|
| Consular Blue Card application | CZK 5,000 under the Foreign Ministry schedule; currency collection/exemptions depend on post and case. |
| Eligible in-country application / extension | CZK 2,500 under Interior Ministry guidance. |
| Qualification and civil documents | Translation, certification, legalisation and recognition costs vary. |
| Relocation and insurance | Separate from the application charge. |
| Professional coordination | Quoted only after the actual scope and provider roles are confirmed. |
The job and the card remain connected
Validity is generally the contract period plus three months, up to three years. Renewal requires continued eligibility and a timely application. Changes of employer, role or loss of employment have notification and status consequences; do not assume the card allows any replacement work without procedure.
Blue Card residence may support later permanent residence, including qualified EU mobility counting, but the detailed continuity and Czech residence conditions still matter. Citizenship has its own permanent-residence and integration tests. Keep contracts, salary changes and travel records from the start.
