The process, step by step
The order matters: eligibility and documents come before committing to a move. Authority periods are not an end-to-end service promise.
01Map the destinationBefore notice or sale
Test destination residence and incoming-asset treatment alongside the Czech position.
Documents & evidence
- Destination plan
- Home/work/family facts
- Assuming both countries use the same residence date
02Inventory continuing exposureBefore restructuring
03Document the changeAt the actual move
Keep travel, new home, work and family evidence consistent with the residence analysis.
Documents & evidence
- Travel log
- New lease
- Employer records
- Backdating a narrative that does not match events
04Notify and preserve accessAs applicable deadlines arise
Coordinate insurer, bank, employer and authority notifications; retain electronic access.
Documents & evidence
- Contact updates
- Insurance confirmations
- Closing the account needed for final settlements
05Complete final and continuing returnsAfter the relevant year and ongoing
Reconcile Czech and foreign returns and retain the supporting file.
Documents & evidence
- Tax records
- Foreign assessments
- Treating departure as the end of all Czech-source obligations
Departure is a change of facts
Ending a lease or deregistering an address is evidence of a move, but it is not a complete tax-residence conclusion. Reassess the available home, intention, days of presence and treaty position. A spouse, business role or continuing home can create a more complicated picture than a one-way ticket suggests.
The 2026 Financial Administration methodology is useful for explaining residence changes during a year. Obtain the destination country’s analysis at the same time: its tax year, residence tests and treatment of incoming assets may not match the Czech system. Preserve a dated record rather than trying to reconstruct it when a return is due.
Separate a personal move from a company migration
The identified Czech ATAD exit provision applies to corporate-income-tax taxpayers and specified transfers that remove Czech taxing rights. A shareholder’s personal flight abroad does not automatically mean the company has migrated, and a corporate asset transfer should not be labelled an ordinary personal departure tax.
This guide does not certify that every private departure is free of a tax charge. Outstanding transactions, business cessation, employee equity, property, deferred items and destination-country rules need their own review. If shares are to be sold around the move, determine the residence period and exemption facts before signing.
Keep a list of Czech obligations that survive
A Czech rental property, business, employment payment or investment income can leave Czech-source obligations after personal residence ends. Notify the relevant institutions of accurate contact and residence details and preserve access to the electronic systems needed for filings. Closing all local administration before the last return can create avoidable problems.
If a company remains, decide who really manages it, who can access the account and who receives official correspondence. Review contracts and payroll for employees who remain or relocate. A registered office is only one part of an operating and compliance arrangement.
Coordinate insurance and residence status
Ask the insurer and the destination system how coverage changes and which documents are required. A move within coordinated European systems may differ from a departure to another region. Keep proof of the new coverage and of any required notifications; do not simply stop paying while legal coverage remains unresolved.
Residence-permit maintenance, absence limits and return rights are separate from tax residence. If you want to preserve permanent residence or a future nationality path, review the consequences of the planned time abroad before leaving.
Close the project with an evidence file
The final file should show the agreed departure date and reasoning, assets and pending transactions, the company’s continuing management arrangements, insurance transitions, and who owns each remaining filing. This is the document set that allows advisers in the next country to start from reliable information rather than assumptions.
