Start with the account’s job
A personal spending account, a company’s operating account, a trust relationship and a brokerage account solve different problems. Explain the expected counterparties, currencies, payment volumes, assets and reasons for Cayman before selecting an institution. A Cayman company does not automatically qualify for every Cayman banking product.
CIMA distinguishes banking licence categories. A regulated international bank may not offer the resident’s ordinary payroll or retail service, and a domestic branch may not accept the proposed non-resident business. Check both the licence and the specific product’s eligibility.
| Need | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Personal banking | Residence eligibility, salary/investment source, everyday transfers, cards and currency conversion |
| Corporate banking | Trading activity, clients, countries, controllers, expected turnover and real operating connection |
| Trust or foundation banking | Trustee/council authority, settlor/founder, beneficiaries and the purpose of the arrangement |
| Brokerage or custody | Investment permissions, custody structure, markets, charges and tax reporting; not simply a current account |
Remote and in-person opening are different channels
CIMA permits risk-based non-face-to-face customer due diligence, but that is not a requirement that every institution onboard every customer remotely. Certification, identity verification, source-of-wealth review and an interview may still be required. A provider can decline a relationship after reviewing its countries or activity.
Cayman National’s current online personal application is an example of a bounded channel: it is for individuals aged eighteen or over residing in Cayman. That page does not establish a universal remote-opening route for non-residents or companies. Obtain the actual bank’s written document and attendance requirements before planning a trip.
Build an evidence file rather than send disconnected documents
Keep names, dates, company ownership and expected activity consistent across the application. A polished narrative does not replace evidence. A large one-off transfer without a clear transaction trail can delay review even when the funds are legitimate.
| Evidence | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Identity and address | Identifies account holders, signatories, owners and relevant controllers; certification requirements can differ |
| Source of wealth | Explains how the overall assets were accumulated, with supporting sale, business or investment records |
| Source of funds | Traces the particular opening transfer and anticipated incoming money |
| Tax residence | Records the actual jurisdictions and identification numbers relevant to reporting |
| Company documents | Constitution, ownership, directors, authority to open and authorised signers |
| Commercial explanation | Contracts, counterparties, activity, expected payment volumes and rationale for the account |
| Trust/foundation documents | Governing instrument, powers, authorised parties and beneficiary/control information as requested |
Foreign companies and complex structures
Cayman National’s corporate checklist specifically asks a company registered outside Cayman for a legal or tax opinion explaining the structure and the rationale for opening the account in Cayman. This is that bank’s published requirement, not a claim that every bank applies the same document rule.
A trust, foundation or multi-layer group should identify all parties relevant to control and benefit before approach. Consider which institution can support the actual structure and assets, not merely which advertises an offshore account. Beneficial-ownership and due-diligence obligations should be reflected in the wider structure design.
Currency, payment costs and cash management
The Cayman dollar is linked to the US dollar, but the currency-board issue rate is not a promise of the rate a retail customer receives. Compare the account’s conversion spread, inward and outward transfer charges, correspondent deductions, card charges and any applicable transaction duty.
For a business, test the practical payment route before relying on it: payer names, settlement currency, beneficiary countries, online approval roles and limits. A bank account is not a merchant-acquiring agreement or a guarantee that a payment processor will accept the business. Arrange those separately when customers pay by card.
What can slow or prevent acceptance
- Applying through a resident-only channel when the applicant does not satisfy that channel’s criteria.
- Unclear beneficial ownership, mandate or trustee authority.
- A proposed activity, country exposure or transaction pattern outside the institution’s risk appetite.
- Inconsistent statements about residence, business location, turnover or the reason for Cayman.
- Incomplete evidence of an asset sale, business proceeds or the transfer path.
- Expecting a corporate account to be ready immediately after incorporation.
Account review and continuing responsibilities
Acceptance is the beginning of the relationship. Keep contact details, residence information, signatories and ownership current, and respond to periodic reviews with updated evidence. A material change of business or a move abroad should be discussed before it changes how the account is used.
Keep a second operational route for essential payments while a new relationship is being assessed. Bank approval, processing time and continued access are decisions of the institution; our role can include selecting a suitable approach, preparing the file and coordinating the process, without guaranteeing acceptance.
