What Cayman does and does not tax
Cayman does not impose a general personal income tax or capital gains tax. Ordinary salary, investment income and gains therefore do not run through a Cayman progressive income-tax schedule. The official government explanation also identifies no inheritance or gift tax. That describes Cayman’s direct-tax system; it does not establish that a particular person has no tax liability anywhere.
Keep three separate calculations: Cayman direct tax, Cayman transaction and employment costs, and tax retained by other countries. A foreign rental property, continuing residence, citizenship-based obligations or work physically performed abroad can require analysis outside Cayman even while the household lives here.
| Item | Cayman starting point | Still examine |
|---|---|---|
| Salary and ordinary investment income | No general personal income tax | Pensions, health insurance and overseas liabilities |
| Private capital gains | No general Cayman CGT | Foreign-source gains and home-country departure rules |
| Inheritance and gifts | No general inheritance/gift tax | Property instruments, succession law and foreign tax |
| Property purchase | Transaction duty may apply | Value, concessions, ownership form and island |
| Imported goods | Commodity-specific duty | Tariff classification and any valid relief |
Residence permission is not a foreign tax clearance
An immigration certificate establishes the right granted under Cayman law. It does not certify that another country regards you as non-resident. The date a previous home was given up, family and economic connections, physical working days and company decision-making can remain material in that other system.
There is no ordinary Cayman resident-versus-non-resident personal income-tax charge to solve by a universal 183-day formula. Particular immigration routes have their own presence and continuity conditions. Treaty entitlement, where relevant, must be tested under the actual arrangement; the UK–Cayman agreement is not a comprehensive worldwide treaty passport.
Assets acquired before the move
Because Cayman has no general capital gains tax, ordinary personal investment gains do not require a Cayman immigration-date cost-basis reset. This is an absence-of-Cayman-CGT classification, not a promise that assets receive a new market value usable in another country.
Keep purchase contracts, reinvestment and improvement records, corporate actions, gift or inheritance records, and any departure valuation. A later move may revive the need for the original acquisition history. A property transaction in Cayman can attract duty on value even when no capital gains tax is imposed.
| Asset event | Practical treatment |
|---|---|
| Arrival with existing shares or investments | No ordinary Cayman CGT arrival-basis calculation; retain the complete history |
| Later sale while living in Cayman | No general Cayman CGT; assess any other country entitled to tax |
| Gift or inheritance | No general Cayman gift/inheritance tax; instrument duties and foreign rules remain separate |
| Buying or transferring Cayman property | Stamp-duty valuation rules, not an income-tax cost-basis calculation |
Asset cost basis on arrival
Ordinary personal investment gains are generally outside Cayman capital-gains tax, so there is no ordinary arrival cost-basis reset to compare with historical cost. Preserve original records for other countries.
A personally held share bought for 100, worth 180 on arrival and sold for 220 does not produce an ordinary Cayman CGT liability. That does not establish a new 180 cost for another country, nor exclude that country’s tax on the gain.
Checked on 14 October 2026; ordinary no-income-tax position separated from the 1 January 2026 high-value property-duty change.
- Not a fair-market-value step-up usable for foreign tax.
- Property transfer duty uses its own transaction valuation rules.
- A future country of residence may require the original acquisition history.
| Asset or situation | Starting value and treatment |
|---|---|
| Existing personal securities | No ordinary Cayman CGT basis calculation on arrival; retain purchase and corporate-action history. |
| Cayman property | Transfer duty can arise on the higher consideration/market value; this is not a gain calculation. |
| Foreign assets and later moves | Source-country or future residence-country rules may use historical cost or another value. |
Pension deductions: the cap and the waiting rule
For covered employment, the minimum combined pension contribution is 10% of pensionable earnings. The employer must bear at least 5%; up to 5% can ordinarily be deducted from the employee. The annual pensionable earnings ceiling is CI$87,000. An employer can choose to fund more, and voluntary saving is a separate choice.
DLP describes Caymanian and permanent-resident employees aged 18–65 as pensionable immediately, subject to the stated full-time-education exception for Caymanians under 23. Other non-Caymanian employees in that age range ordinarily enter after nine months of employment in the Islands. That period is not restarted simply by changing employer or beginning another probation. Exempt categories and the exact employment history need checking.
- The illustration assumes a full covered year and the ordinary split; it excludes health premiums and other deductions.
- Pensionable earnings include more than base salary; bonuses, commissions, gratuities and leave pay need classification.
- Self-employed persons ordinarily contribute at least 10% of their pensionable earnings.
| Ordinary 5% / 5% illustration | Employee contribution | Employer contribution |
|---|---|---|
| CI$50,000 fully pensionable annual earnings | CI$2,500 | CI$2,500 |
| CI$87,000 fully pensionable annual earnings | CI$4,350 | CI$4,350 |
| CI$100,000 covered earnings, capped at CI$87,000 | CI$4,350 | CI$4,350 |
Health insurance is a separate amount
The Standard Health Insurance Contract is the minimum prescribed cover, obtained from an approved insurer. The employer pays the premium and may recover 50% of the employee’s standard premium from pay. It must also arrange coverage for the employee’s unemployed spouse and resident dependent children where required, but it is not obliged to subsidise their premiums and can recover those amounts as arranged with the employee.
Obtain a household quote before comparing take-home pay. Age, plan, family composition and additional benefits matter. The employee health deduction is not 50% of salary, and the pension earnings cap does not cap the health premium. Ask separately about outpatient limits, prescriptions, pre-existing conditions and overseas treatment.
Property, purchases and imports
For an ordinary property conveyance outside a relief, the general rate below CI$2 million is 7.5%. At CI$2 million or above, the 2026 category is 10% of the relevant value, not 10% only on the excess. The comparison is based on the higher of consideration and market value. Transfers involving landholding companies and specific exemptions require their own treatment.
Import duties depend on the item’s tariff classification and relief conditions. A quoted headline import rate is not a dependable all-goods sales-tax calculator. A newcomer shipping household effects should review CBC’s C5 declaration and the evidence required for relief before sending goods. Retail prices may already reflect import costs.
| Illustration, no relief assumed | Duty arithmetic |
|---|---|
| Property value CI$1,000,000 at 7.5% | CI$75,000 |
| Property value CI$2,000,000 at 10% | CI$200,000 |

Leaving Cayman and moving again
The absence of a general Cayman capital gains tax also means there is no ordinary personal CGT departure calculation of the kind found in income-tax jurisdictions. Selling or transferring local property can still involve transaction charges. A move to another country may bring historic assets into its tax system; do not discard acquisition evidence or assume the receiving country will accept a Cayman arrival value.
Keep pension, health and immigration closure distinct. Employment ending may affect insurance continuation and the basis for residence; a pension balance is governed by pension access or transfer rules, not simply by the lack of income tax.
