A practical sequence for a Cayman move
Stages show dependencies. Authority processing varies; an approval date is not assumed.
01Resolve route and household eligibilityBefore financial commitments
02Align the tax and investment timetableBefore a sale, distribution or move
Review origin-country obligations and the Cayman costs attached to the chosen transaction.
Documents & evidence
- Asset cost records
- Corporate structure and decision-making map
- Property budget
- Confusing absence of Cayman income tax with termination of overseas residence
03Assemble and file the current applicationDocument recency measured against filing
04Confirm housing, education and coverBefore moving the household
05Record conditions and recurring datesOn approval and throughout residence
Choose the permission before the property
A scouting visit can help choose a neighbourhood, school and bank, but visitor admission is not permission to work or a guarantee of longer residence. Decide whether the principal applicant is taking employment, establishing a qualifying business, or living on independent means before signing a long lease or committing to a property that must meet an investment test.
Prepare one household matrix showing the principal applicant, spouse or civil partner, children, passports, required work rights and school year groups. A residence route that suits the principal applicant may not provide the partner’s desired occupation or an adult child’s continued permission.
Sequence the departure tax review
Cayman does not ordinarily charge personal income tax, but a move does not by itself end residence elsewhere. Before fixing the departure date, review the origin country’s ties, exit taxes, business-management rules and treatment of company distributions, employee equity and investment gains. Retain evidence of the actual move and the continuing overseas connections.
Coordinate the home move with the operating business. If you continue directing a company from another country, employ people there, or spend substantial working time there, a Cayman residence document cannot resolve those separate tax exposures.
Documents to assemble
The enacted 2026 medical-document recency requirement must be checked against the filing date. Older checklist wording is not a safe reason to use a stale certificate. Obtain the current route-specific pack rather than reuse another family’s application.
| File | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity and family | Passports, birth and relationship documents, custody or consent evidence where relevant; certified translations if required |
| Character and health | Current police clearance, medical evidence and the health-insurance confirmation required for the selected route |
| Money and investment | Bank confirmations, income evidence, source of funds, ownership records and title/valuation material for a property route |
| Employment or business | Employer sponsorship or the actual licensed business, ownership, role, premises and staffing evidence |
| Children | School records, admission correspondence and evidence of any dependency/education or disability variation |
| Existing permissions | Current immigration documents and the dates needed to identify transitional rules |
A lease is a practical and financial commitment
Treat a short inspection stay and a long tenancy as different decisions. Inspect cooling, water pressure, damp, windows and storm protection; ask how utilities, internet, maintenance and any strata restrictions are handled. Request a written inventory, payment schedule, break conditions and the arrangements if the residence application is delayed.
For a purchase, independent title, financing, valuation and condition checks are particularly important when immigration eligibility depends on developed, paid-up property. Stamp duty is an additional cost: from 1 January 2026 the higher of price and market value reaching CI$2m ordinarily moves the whole transfer into the 10% category, subject to applicable relief. The property budget and the residence investment requirement are not interchangeable.
School places and medical cover
Confirm the child’s admission before assuming a public-school place follows residence. The Department of Education’s 2026/27 notice gives Caymanian applicants priority and reports capacity restrictions in multiple year groups. Private-school admission, fees and support provision should be investigated as a separate contingency, not left until the family arrives.
Arrange compliant health insurance with a clear start date. Employer duties cover arranging eligible employee and dependent cover, but the division of premiums differs for the employee and dependants. Ask about exclusions, pre-existing conditions, overseas treatment and the chosen doctors. The Anthony S. Eden Hospital in George Town provides emergency and specialist services, but access does not mean every treatment is free or included in every policy.
Shipping, banking and daily arrangements
Ask Customs and Border Control about the C5 personal-effects declaration and the conditions for relief before shipping household goods. Keep an itemised packing list, ownership evidence and arrival documents. Customs duty is commodity-specific; do not multiply the whole shipment by a single supposed Cayman sales-tax rate.
Prepare banking documents early, but keep funds accessible through an existing account until acceptance and payment capabilities are confirmed. Arrange utilities, local communications, transport and an emergency contact plan. Test the actual school and office journey rather than infer commuting time from a map of a small island.
The first year is a compliance calendar
Record certificate conditions, annual declarations, fees, required presence, work restrictions and dependent ages. A twenty-five-year document can still carry annual obligations. A child approaching the selected route’s age or education milestone, or a partner planning employment, deserves a review before the change, not after permission lapses.
Employers should separately enrol eligible staff for pensions and arrange health cover. Bank records, payroll, immigration declarations and the actual operating business should tell the same story. Keep a dated annual folder so that renewals or later status applications can be supported without reconstructing years of evidence.
