Dual nationality

The selective 2021 nominated-citizenship framework allows the approved categories to retain existing nationality. It is not an unrestricted citizenship-by-investment offer or a blanket rule for every acquisition route.

Naturalisation

Golden and other long-term residence do not create a guaranteed naturalisation entitlement. Selective nominated citizenship operates under separate conditions; it is not an open fixed-price citizenship programme.

Citizenship through marriage

The published spouse-naturalisation provision concerns a foreign woman married to a UAE national: seven years from the citizenship application when there is a child, or ten years without children, with continuing marriage and further conditions. Defined widow/divorce cases have additional rules. This is discretionary citizenship by federal decree, not a gender-neutral automatic marriage route.

Domestic recognition

The UAE’s federal civil-personal-status regulations require a civil marriage to be between a male and a female. The availability of a non-Muslim civil ceremony does not create a same-sex marriage route.

Immigration & nationality

Family residence requires a recognised relationship supported by an attested marriage contract. The ability of eligible residents, including Golden or Green Residence holders, to sponsor family does not by itself recognise a same-sex marriage abroad. Assess each partner’s independent qualifying residence route before treating a spouse as included.

A Golden Visa is not citizenship

The UAE’s long-term residence schemes provide immigration status under their conditions. They do not establish an automatic right to an Emirati passport after a fixed number of years. A business or family plan should be viable on the basis of the residence permission actually available, without assigning financial value to a speculative future nationality.

The selective nomination framework

The government’s 2021 announcement describes nationality eligibility for specified investors, professionals and exceptional talents, with category-specific conditions. It describes nomination through rulers’ and crown princes’ courts, emirate executive councils and the Cabinet on relevant federal nominations. It is not an open retail citizenship programme with a universal published purchase price.

Evidence and decision-making

An eligible person would need the evidence for the nominated category, such as recognised achievements, relevant experience, recommendations or qualifying ownership, as applicable. Meeting a described condition should not be marketed as an entitlement to approval. Before paying an intermediary, confirm the official legal route and the authority involved.

Family and ongoing implications

The announcement addresses eligible family members and conditions concerning oath, compliance and notification of other nationalities. Current law and the decision’s terms must be checked. Nationality, actual tax residence and treatment of a foreign business are still separate. If the practical objective is a stable UAE home, compare the available residence programmes first.

Do not price a residence investment as a citizenship entitlement

The government announcement includes investors, doctors, specialists, scientists, inventors and selected creative professionals, each with different evidence. An investor’s property ownership is not a published retail citizenship threshold equivalent to the Golden Residency investment test. A doctor’s experience or an inventor’s recognised patent belongs to a different nomination category, not an alternative payment band.

Before engaging an intermediary, require the proposed legal category and competent authority to be identified in writing. Separate document preparation from any claim of access to a nominating body. A professional fee cannot purchase a governmental discretion or make an unverified nomination certain. A residence plan should remain useful even if nationality is never offered; do not make the family’s ability to stay depend on a speculative passport outcome.

Use a category-specific evidence review and an honest timetable

The useful preliminary work is an evidence assessment: identity and family records, the applicant’s professional or investment history, recognised achievements and any required recommendations. Check which facts can actually be proven and which body issues the relevant endorsement. Resolve name differences and document authenticity before submission through an authorised route. The decision and any continuing conditions remain with the state.

No universal processing period or open application sequence was verified for this selective nomination framework. It would therefore be misleading to display an investment-programme countdown. The announcement allows retention of original nationality for the selected framework, but the other country’s law also needs review. Assess family status, documentation and later notification obligations individually.
