Choose the account around the job
A Singapore relationship can support operating payments, personal reserves, investment custody or regional business. Those uses may call for different institutions and account types. Start with currencies, payment corridors, typical counterparties, transaction sizes, access needs and the legal owner of funds. A bank account and a payment institution balance should not be treated as the same product.
Regulation does not mean universal acceptance
MAS maintains a directory showing regulated institutions and authorised activities. Banks apply customer and beneficial-owner identification, account review and transaction monitoring. Whether a particular foreign individual, company or industry is accepted depends on the institution’s policy and the facts. A Singapore company registration does not entitle its owner to an account.
Build a coherent application
Prepare identity and residence evidence, ownership and control records, an explanation of the business, source of wealth and the specific source of incoming funds. Contracts, invoices, tax records, sale documents and statements may support that story. Match the account’s expected activity to the explanation given. These are preparation categories; the bank determines the actual documentary requirements.
Understand protection and access
SDIC generally protects eligible Singapore-dollar deposits up to S$100,000 in aggregate per depositor per scheme member. Foreign-currency deposits, structured deposits and investment products are outside that deposit-insurance cover. Confirm the booking entity, account type and protection before transferring significant funds. Also test online access, payment approvals, foreign-exchange costs and backup arrangements.
Maintain the relationship
Keep ownership, address and tax-residence details current and respond to review requests. Large or unusual transfers are easier to explain when the documents were prepared before sending. We can assess the client and intended use against available bank appetite, then scope account-opening assistance. The useful outcome is a suitable functioning account, not simply an impressive bank name.
Select the account around the real owner and use
A Singapore operating company, a foreign company, an individual investor and a family investment vehicle do not follow one universal onboarding process. DBS publishes a relationship-manager-assisted channel for foreign-incorporated companies, certain foreign-owned structures and specialised businesses. OCBC separately advertises remote onboarding for eligible foreign-owned companies. These examples show why a statement that every applicant must travel—or that nobody must travel—is unreliable.
Check the institution’s current appetite for the nationality, residence, ownership chain, industry and transaction countries before preparing an extensive file. Explain why Singapore banking is commercially useful: regional suppliers, customers, treasury or investment access. A large opening balance does not compensate for an unclear business or untraceable funds. We do not infer bank acceptance from successful company incorporation.
Prepare a file that reconciles ownership, wealth and transactions
Start with incorporation and constitutional records, directors and beneficial owners, authorised signers and actual operating address. Add a concise description of products, customer and supplier countries, expected monthly turnover and examples of genuine contracts or invoices. For a new company, explain its funding and how it expects to win business; do not invent completed sales.
Source of wealth explains how the owner accumulated the assets. Source of funds explains the particular transfer entering the account. A business sale may require the sale agreement, proof of ownership, tax records and statements tracing settlement. A company loan requires a real agreement and an explanation of the lender. Keep the names and amounts consistent across each step. Ask which documents require certification and how identity verification will occur before arranging an appointment.
Compare protection and functionality before moving the balance
SDIC covers eligible Singapore-dollar deposits up to S$100,000 in aggregate per depositor per scheme member. Foreign-currency deposits and investment products are not interchangeable with insured Singapore-dollar deposits. Multiple accounts at the same member generally share the cap. Confirm the legal entity holding the deposit, not just the brand displayed by an app.
Also compare foreign-exchange spreads, correspondent-bank charges, payment limits, supported currencies, account-maintenance costs and access after a residence change. Approval is followed by activation, signatory controls and a small test transfer before larger flows. Keep business activity and tax-residence information current, and retain transaction evidence for later reviews. Offshore Capitalist can assess fit and coordinate an application; any accepted banking engagement’s fee/refund terms are confirmed separately, and do not guarantee a named bank or an immutable account relationship.
