Iceland at a glance

Iceland deserves a joined-up assessment: permission to live there, the treatment of a foreign business, the taxation of investments and the practical cost of maintaining an island base. A residence document does not answer the tax questions, and a foreign company does not automatically remain outside Icelandic taxation when its owner moves.

The questions that decide whether Iceland fits

IssueWhat it meansAction
A specialist joining an Icelandic employerCheck the work/residence route and, separately, eligibility for approved foreign-expert tax relief.Employment, immigration and tax approvals are separate.
An EEA/EFTA entrepreneurEstablish the actual registration basis and the business activity.Review personal residence, company management, payroll and VAT together.
An owner of a foreign businessMap shareholders, control and where the business is managed.CFC and corporate-residence rules can matter even without distributing cash.
A family considering settlementTest each family member’s route, schooling and absence plans.A child’s 18th birthday can change residence and work rights.
An investor with appreciated assetsReconstruct acquisition history before moving.Arrival value does not normally replace cost for ordinary purchased shares.

Choose the home around the journeys you actually make

For a first scouting trip, compare the capital area with a regional base using the trips you will repeat: work, school, healthcare and flights. An airport’s international designation does not establish a useful year-round route to your clients or family.

IssueWhat it meansAction
Reykjavík and the capital areaKeflavík (KEF) is the principal international gateway; Reykjavík (RKV) serves domestic connections.Check both airport codes. A domestic/international connection can involve a ground transfer between airports.
AkureyriNorthern base with domestic and selected international flights through AEY.Compare the actual winter and summer schedule before relying on a direct route.
EgilsstaðirEastern regional base served by EGS.Plan onward connections and disruption alternatives; do not equate airport status with daily overseas service.

A winter visit answers questions a summer holiday will miss

The maritime climate is milder than the latitude suggests, but cool summers, wind, rain and rapid weather changes affect daily routines. Conditions vary between exposed coasts, sheltered valleys and higher ground. Use local observations and forecasts for the intended home rather than a national average.

During a viewing, check heating, ventilation, daylight, parking and the route to school or work. Ask whether the property can be registered as your legal domicile. Test the airport journey in the conditions in which you will actually travel.
