Before making commitments

Identify the route for every family member and whether you are entitled to work. EEA/EFTA registration, a Nordic move, a national work permit and a family residence card are different processes. A short visit to inspect homes does not automatically permit starting a local job.

Prepare originals before you leave the issuing country

Obtaining a missing certificate after relocation can be more difficult than obtaining it while still resident in the issuing country. Check the exact route’s checklist and authentication requirements before paying for translations; an ordinary scan may not substitute for a required authenticated original.

The 2026 insurance change matters

Iceland Health announced that the waiting period for arrivals from outside the EEA would shorten from six to three months, principally effective 1 August 2026. Older permit PDFs can still refer to six months. Use the current checklist, and separately verify whether previous EEA insurance gives earlier entitlement. Public coverage is not a promise that every treatment is free.

Make the scouting trip practical

Test a normal working week. Check the commute, winter route to the airport, school availability, home internet and whether the tenancy supports address registration. Review the seasonality of flights before selecting a regional base around one route. The nearer Reykjavík airport is not the same airport as Keflavík.
