From the employment offer to permission to work
Prepare the employment, residence and work-authorisation evidence together. Document preparation, authority assessment, entry and renewal are separate stages. Check the current official queue for the actual case; no guaranteed decision date is stated here.
01Confirm the role and expertiseBefore preparing the application; resolve professional recognition first where required.
The employer and worker establish that the role requires qualifying expertise and that the qualifications, salary and working conditions support this route. A remote-work preference or foreign-company ownership alone does not establish eligibility.
Documents & evidence
- Role description and proposed employment terms
- Degrees, recognised credentials or detailed relevant experience
- Professional-recognition evidence where applicable
- A job title alone does not explain why the work requires expert knowledge.
- A regulated profession can require separate recognition before the proposed work can begin.
02Prepare and submit the applicationAfter the role and terms are confirmed; document collection has its own lead time.
Complete the current residence and related work-permit applications with a consistent employment file. The researched residence application fee is ISK 80,000; use the current official payment instructions. The route page does not state a fast-track service fee.
Documents & evidence
- Signed applications and traceable fee receipt
- Passport copies and 35 × 45 mm photograph
- Required criminal-record evidence, legalisation and translations
- Signed contract, salary and pension-fund details
- Qualifications and current insurance certificate
- Names, dates, salary and duties must be consistent across the applications and contract.
- Check passport validity of at least 90 days beyond the proposed permit validity and the age/certification requirements for the documents.
03Await the authority assessmentCase-specific official processing queue; no guaranteed decision date.
Since 8 July 2026, the Directorate of Immigration processes and issues work permits as well as assessing residence permission. Both legal requirements still need to be satisfied. Keep the application evidence available while the authority considers the file.
Documents & evidence
- Submitted application and supporting-evidence copies
- Any additional evidence requested by the authority
- Submitting the application does not itself authorise employment.
- Do not rely on the former division of work-permit processing between immigration and labour authorities.
04Follow the entry and registration instructionsAfter the relevant decision, subject to the applicant’s entry and stay rules.
Follow the approval’s instructions for entry, photographs and registration. Whether the applicant may be in Iceland during processing depends on nationality and the route; resolve that separately from the work start date.
Documents & evidence
- Permit decision and entry instructions
- Passport
- Photograph and registration evidence requested in the decision
- A pending application is not a general permission to enter or remain in Iceland.
- Insurance dates need to match the actual travel and coverage arrangements.
05Begin the authorised employmentOnly once the necessary authorisation exists; compliance continues throughout the job.
Start the approved work only when authorised, then maintain the agreed employment terms, pension and payroll arrangements. Any foreign-expert tax concession requires its own application and decision.
Documents & evidence
- Residence and work authorisation
- Employment contract and pension details
- Payroll records; separate tax-relief application if applicable
- Work-permit approval does not automatically approve foreign-expert tax relief.
- Do not promise take-home pay using a tax concession that has not been separately assessed.
06Plan renewal and changesBefore permission expires or the employment arrangement changes.
Review permit expiry, absences and employer changes. Check whether a new job needs new approval instead of assuming that the existing work permission is portable.
Documents & evidence
- Current permit and expiry details
- Current or proposed employment contract
- Records relevant to renewal and absences
- Changing employers can require a new approval.
- Separate family applications and their continuing conditions need their own review.
Who this route is for
This route starts with an Icelandic employment opportunity requiring qualifying expertise. The employer and applicant must establish the need for that expertise and appropriate employment terms. A person simply owning a foreign business or wanting to work remotely should not assume that this route applies.
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Genuine role requiring expert knowledge | Explain responsibilities and why the qualifications match the work. |
| Qualifications | Relevant recognised education or qualifying experience | A regulated profession may require separate professional recognition. |
| Employer terms | Contract and salary consistent with applicable employment standards | Pension arrangements and working conditions belong in the evidence. |
| Two permissions | Residence and the relevant work authorisation | Do not start simply because documents have been submitted. |
Build a consistent application file
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Signed application and fee receipt | Use the current official form; include traceable payment details | Names and dates must match the passport. |
| Identity | 35 × 45 mm photograph and required passport copies; passport at least 90 days beyond proposed permit validity | Make the machine-readable zone and signature visible. |
| Conduct | Criminal-record evidence required by the route | Check the issuing authority, age of document, legalisation and translation requirements. |
| Employment | Signed contract, role, salary and pension-fund details | Explain any inconsistency between the contract and the work-permit application. |
| Expertise | Degrees, credentials and detailed experience confirmations | Identify duration and substance of previous work. |
| Insurance | Current required insurance certificate | Confirm the effective dates if travel or processing changes. |
Family and a longer-term plan
A qualifying expert worker can sponsor eligible family members under separate applications. A spouse’s work position is not necessarily the same as that of every other family-permit holder. Children, spouses and parents aged 67+ have their own eligibility and documents; family fees and preparation costs are additional.
The foreign-expert tax concession is not included automatically
A work-permit approval does not approve the wage-tax concession. The tax regime requires a separate application and decision. Check its prior-residence condition, deadline and qualifying employer/role before building a net-salary promise around it.
