Start with the purpose of the account
For a resident, the first need is often salary, rent and domestic bills. For a business, it is a usable payment and cash-management arrangement that matches the legal entity and activity. Brokerage custody, merchant processing and a deposit account are different products; obtaining one does not establish eligibility for the others.
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Personal operating account | Salary, household bills and cards | Check onboarding, electronic identification and the required local connections. |
| Corporate account | Receipts, suppliers, payroll and tax | Prepare the entity, controllers, signatories and business explanation for the chosen bank. |
| Savings | Currency, liquidity, notice and deposit protection | A high ISK interest rate is not a foreign-currency return guarantee. |
| Brokerage / investments | Custody, market access, fees and reporting | Investment losses and deposit protection are different issues. |
Remote onboarding depends on identification
Landsbankinn offers digital onboarding using electronic identification. Its self-service electronic-ID route has specific requirements, including a valid Icelandic passport; people who do not meet them are directed to an appointment or another registration centre with valid ID. This is one bank’s published process, not a promise of remote onboarding for every foreign nonresident.
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Before contacting the bank | Confirm accepted identity and whether a kennitala/electronic ID is needed | A general app description is not approval of your case. |
| Identity step | Provide the bank’s required valid identification | Ask if an appointment or additional checks are needed. |
| Account application | Describe the intended use and provide requested evidence | Expect questions appropriate to residence, ownership and transactions. |
| Activation | Check transfers, cards, limits and access | Do not route critical payroll or client funds until the account works. |
Deposit protection does not cover every financial product
The Central Bank states that deposits are protected up to the equivalent of EUR 100,000 in Icelandic króna under the Icelandic framework. Confirm eligibility, aggregation and the relevant institution before relying on the limit. Securities and investment products have a different protection framework; ordinary market loss is not a bank-deposit claim.
Plan ISK cash needs separately from investment exposure
The króna is a separate currency. Match likely Icelandic expenses with appropriate liquid funds and compare conversion spreads and transfer fees before moving money. The Central Bank’s published exchange rates are reference rates, not executable bank quotes. Preserve transfer and acquisition records for foreign-account reporting and future investment calculations.
A useful account-opening brief
Prepare a concise factual brief: who will own the account, where each person is resident for tax, what the account will be used for, expected currencies and counterparties, and how funds were earned. For a business add the ownership chain, decision-makers, contracts and operating locations. Confirm the bank’s case-specific checklist; no fixed approval period is promised here.
