Plan the visit, prepare the file and preserve lawful stay
The published route warns that a new residence decision can take up to six months. This does not extend an existing visitor stay or guarantee a decision before the intended journey. The approved temporary stay is separately limited to no more than 180 continuous days, accounting for the stated Schengen time.
01Confirm the purpose and available daysBefore committing to a travel plan or application.
Check that the visit fits the current limited-purpose route: close-family visits or qualifying artists, scientists or athletes. The applicant must not intend to settle or have received a short-term permit during the previous twelve months. Calculate the prior Schengen days relevant to the requested stay.
Documents & evidence
- Invitation, relationship evidence or confirmation of the qualifying activity
- Passport and travel history
- A proposed temporary itinerary and return plan
- This is not an automatic replacement for every former remote-work visa case.
- Planned local work may require a different residence or work basis.
02Prepare the evidence and pay the feeBefore submission; allow time to obtain originals and certification.
Complete and sign the current paper application. Gather evidence supporting the full visit, pay the researched ISK 12,200 processing fee and include the receipt. Funds, insurance and return arrangements need to support the actual proposed dates.
Documents & evidence
- Signed application and fee receipt
- Officially certified original bank evidence
- Purpose evidence or invitation
- Health and accident insurance throughout the stay, with at least ISK 2 million cover
- Passport copies, with validity at least 90 days beyond the requested permission
- Return ticket or evidence of funds for return travel
- An ordinary online bank printout does not meet the stated original certification requirement.
- The published monthly support amounts are ISK 259,951 for an individual or ISK 415,922 for a qualifying supported married couple; check the relevant household basis.
03Submit through the stated paper channelOnce the application and required evidence are complete.
Send the paper application by mail or use the Directorate’s drop box as described by the official route. The route is not an online visitor-extension mechanism.
Documents & evidence
- Complete signed application packet
- Required originals, supporting copies and payment receipt
- Filing an incomplete packet can leave evidence to be resolved during assessment.
- Do not mistake delivery of an application for approval of a longer stay.
04Wait without overstayingThe official page warns that a new decision can take up to six months; existing lawful-stay limits still apply.
Visa-required applicants generally apply and wait outside Iceland. Visa-exempt applicants must leave before their lawful 90/180-day visitor stay expires if the application remains pending. Plan travel around current permission, not an assumed approval date.
Documents & evidence
- Passport and existing entry/stay evidence
- Travel-day record
- Application copy and any additional evidence requested
- Applying does not extend the lawful visitor period.
- A possible six-month decision period is not a promise that the case will finish within remaining visitor days.
05Follow the decision and permitted datesAfter the decision; a refusal has a stated fifteen-day appeal period.
Follow the approval’s registration and collection instructions, and use the actual permission dates for the visit. If refused, check the decision’s appeal instructions and the official fifteen-day period promptly.
Documents & evidence
- Decision letter
- Passport
- Any registration or collection evidence specified in the approval
- The approved stay can be shorter than the maximum because prior Schengen time matters.
- This temporary permission does not establish a permanent-settlement route or bypass separate work authorisation.
A limited-purpose visit, not a settlement product
The current official page covers extended visits to close family and visits by artists, scientists or athletes where another residence category is not the appropriate basis. The applicant must not intend to settle, and must not have received a short-term permit in the previous twelve months. Do not treat it as an automatic replacement for every old remote-work visa case.
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | No more than 180 continuous days; Schengen time is counted in the stated limit | Approval duration depends on previous time spent in the area. |
| Age | Normally at least 18 | A minor can apply with a parent or legal guardian. |
| Local work | Use the appropriate residence/work basis if required | An extended-visit document does not bypass employment permission. |
| Permanent move | Outside this route’s purpose | Use a settlement-capable basis where you intend to relocate. |
Evidence for the full visit
| Issue | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Invitation, family certificate, residency programme confirmation or explanation | Connect the supporting evidence to the actual reason for travel. |
| Funds | Published monthly minimum ISK 259,951 individual; ISK 415,922 for a qualifying supported married couple | Officially certified original bank evidence; an ordinary online printout is not sufficient certification. |
| Insurance | Valid health and accident insurance throughout the stay; minimum ISK 2 million cover | Read exclusions and actual dates. |
| Passport | Valid at least 90 days beyond the requested permission | Copy identity, signature and stamped pages. |
| Return | Return ticket or funds for the return journey | Demonstrate a credible temporary stay. |
Questions to resolve before choosing the route
Does the planned activity actually require a work permit? Is the purpose listed? How many Schengen days have already been used? Is there an intention to establish a permanent home? A confident answer to those questions is more useful than recycling an old digital-nomad income threshold.
