A BVI company and a life in the BVI are different decisions
The British Virgin Islands combines a widely used international company jurisdiction with a small island community. A company can be useful in a properly designed international ownership or investment structure. Moving to Tortola is a separate decision involving immigration permission, work, housing, healthcare and travel connections.
The territory uses the US dollar and has its own immigration and revenue systems. British overseas territory status does not make it part of the United Kingdom’s domestic tax system, and a British passport alone does not grant permission to work locally. Start by identifying whether you need a legal entity, a place to live, or both.
| Your objective | What to examine | The common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Form or hold a company | Company law, registered agent, beneficial ownership, annual return and substance analysis. | Do not assume that incorporation moves management, staff or shareholder taxation. |
| Move for employment or business | An applicable work/entry permission and a practical household plan. | Do not begin work simply because you entered as a visitor or own a company. |
| Settle over the long term | Residence Status and, separately, Belonger and nationality eligibility. | Elapsed years and home ownership do not make approval automatic. |
Zero income tax, with costs that still need a budget
Personal and corporate income-tax rates were reduced to zero in 2005. Employment is nevertheless subject to payroll tax and social contributions, and a resident business must consider licensing and transaction-specific charges. Imported goods, accommodation and property transactions should be costed on their own rules.
For owners living elsewhere, the decisive tax questions may be outside the BVI: where decisions are made, where work is performed, and whether the owner’s country attributes foreign-company income. A neutral BVI company layer does not remove those questions.

Choose the island around your normal week
Road Town, on Tortola, is the practical starting point for someone who needs regular access to government departments, professional services, shops and ferry connections. A home elsewhere on Tortola can change the daily journey substantially even when the map distance looks small. Make the actual school, office and shopping trip before signing a long lease.
Virgin Gorda and Anegada offer different island routines and airport/ferry access. A holiday preference should be tested against medical needs, freight deliveries, weather disruption and how often you must leave the territory. The country’s population estimate below covers the whole territory, not a single city.
| Base | Why consider it | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Road Town and nearby Tortola | Administrative and business access, Road Harbour and ferry connections. | Housing access roads, office commute, parking and noise on an ordinary working day. |
| Other Tortola bases | More choice of coastal or hillside setting. | Distance to Road Town, Beef Island airport and the family’s chosen school. |
| Virgin Gorda or Anegada | A smaller-island setting with its own transport gateway. | Frequency and seasonality of transport; specialist healthcare and backup travel plans. |
Plan the household’s status separately
Entry permission, a work permit, a Residence Certificate, Belonger status and British nationality are distinct. A spouse or child may require evidence and permissions that the principal applicant does not. The current Residence Status service allows endorsement of a spouse and children under 18; a child reaching 18 must apply separately within six months.
BVI citizenship is not a standalone nationality. The relevant nationality can be British overseas territories citizenship, with British citizenship requiring its own legal analysis. Our citizenship guide sets out the different routes and explains why an investment or a company registration should not be described as a passport programme.
Compare the whole journey
EIS on Beef Island is the principal air gateway for Tortola. Check direct and connecting flights for your dates; a route marketed during one season may not run throughout the year. Road Town and West End also have international ferry links to the US Virgin Islands. Travelling through St Thomas means satisfying US entry requirements as well as BVI requirements.
Keep a realistic buffer between a flight, a road transfer and a ferry. Separate tickets, immigration, luggage and rough weather can turn a short map distance into a missed onward journey. Direct access matters more than a simple count of airports.
Build one plan for the structure and the move
A useful first review connects the intended owner, decision-makers, operating countries, banking needs and family timeline. That makes it possible to decide whether the BVI belongs in the plan and which tasks need local professionals. The information library covers routes more broadly than our service catalogue; a guide is not a promise that we arrange every application.
