Decide what will let you live and work here

Start with a lawful basis for every person in the household. A visitor admission, a work permit and Residence Status answer different questions. The current long-term residence route is designed for people with a qualifying established history, so it is not a substitute for a new arrival’s work or entry permission.

Map the employer, intended activity, home-country departure obligations, bank arrangements, school needs and health cover together. An entrepreneur should establish whether the BVI company is simply a holding vehicle or will conduct local operations. That distinction affects immigration, trade licensing and payroll.

A relocation sequence with approval gates

This sequence is a planning order, not a government processing guarantee. The authorities do not publish one reliable end-to-end period for every household. Make non-refundable commitments only when you understand the approval and document dependencies.

Rent around access, water and storm resilience

Use a scouting stay to compare central Road Town, nearby hillside addresses and other Tortola bases. Drive the actual road in normal commuting conditions and inspect parking and pedestrian access. A short straight-line distance can conceal steep roads and a very different school run.

Before agreeing to a lease, inspect water storage, drainage, ventilation, storm shutters, backup power arrangements and the responsibilities for repairs. Request the full deposit, utility and termination terms in writing. If you intend to buy property, check non-Belonger landholding permission and transaction costs with a local conveyancer before assuming that a purchase can proceed like a domestic transaction.

Confirm services for the actual household

Check NHI registration and contribution category rather than assuming that holding a permit immediately solves all healthcare costs. Discuss existing conditions, medication supply, specialist treatment and medical evacuation with the insurer and treating team. Contributions, benefits, copayments and overseas care are different questions.

Obtain school admission information for the specific child and address before committing to housing. Immigration documentation may require a school letter, but an immigration application is not a school placement. For a child approaching eighteen, plan the separate status application rather than relying on parental endorsement indefinitely.

Choose the air or ferry itinerary deliberately

EIS is the main air gateway for Tortola, with Miami and regional links identified by the Tourist Board. St Thomas plus an international ferry can be another route, but it introduces US entry rules and a transfer between separate transport systems. Confirm whether the ferry uses Road Town or West End and whether an overnight stop is required.

Hurricane season runs from June to November. Keep flexible arrangements, insurance and a communication plan for weather disruption. A route’s published seasonal availability is more useful than assuming every advertised flight or ferry operates daily.

Close the departure and business questions before arrival

Record where each asset was acquired, where it is situated, whether the former country imposes a departure charge and how the next country treats the asset. The BVI’s income-tax position does not retrospectively cancel another country’s accrued gains or reporting obligations.

If you continue directing companies, map decisions and staff locations after the move. Banking, contracts, management and the family’s residence should tell a consistent story. Our structuring work can connect those decisions and identify which implementation tasks require local providers.
