Leaving the BVI is a household and business project
Start with the next country’s arrival date, immigration basis and tax-residence rules. A low-tax period in the BVI does not determine how the next country treats investments, salary, a BVI company or deferred remuneration. Some destinations use historical acquisition cost, while others allow specified arrival valuations; preserve both sets of evidence.
Prepare a dated inventory of assets, entities, bank accounts, employment rights and family status. Record which assets will remain in the BVI and which will move. The guide does not assert a universal BVI exit-tax exemption for every transaction simply because ordinary income-tax rates are zero.
Check what absence does to local status
Residence Certificates have renewal and absence conditions. A move away can affect the certificate and a future residence/Belonger or nationality application even if the passport remains valid. The 2024 amendment changed important absence provisions; read the actual certificate and obtain confirmation of how an intended long absence is treated.
For a family, check whether a spouse or child’s permission depends on the departing principal applicant. A teenager approaching eighteen may need an independent application on a different timetable. Do not leave the family’s status to be discovered at a later return journey.
Close employment and household administration in writing
Agree the last employment date, final salary and benefits, permit position and any outstanding deductions with the employer. Notify the relevant payroll, social-security and NHI administrators as required by the case; keep statements proving contributions and coverage periods. A final payslip is not evidence that every registration was closed.
End or transfer the lease, utilities, local insurance and school arrangements using their actual notice provisions. Maintain an address and secure access for any later correspondence. Ask the bank about account eligibility after a residence change and update tax-residence self-certifications rather than leaving an obsolete BVI address on file.
| Workstream | Action | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Employer and permits | Final date, final pay, references and status change documentation. | Keep written acknowledgements. |
| Health and social contributions | Coverage end/change and contribution records. | Arrange uninterrupted cover in the next country. |
| Banks and investments | New residential/tax-residence details and account eligibility. | Download statements and acquisition-lot history before access changes. |
| Housing and utilities | Contractual notice, inspection and deposit reconciliation. | Photograph condition and retain receipts. |
| Children | School records, medical records and independent immigration implications. | Distinguish local permission from nationality. |
A company can stay registered while its tax exposure changes
Moving the owner or decision-maker can create new residence, permanent-establishment, CFC or reporting questions in the destination. Decide where directors will actually exercise authority and whether staff, contracts or assets also move. This is especially important if the original structure relied on a particular management arrangement.
A retained BVI company still needs its registered agent, beneficial-ownership updates, annual return and economic-substance classification/reporting as applicable. Dormancy or an owner’s departure is not automatic dissolution. If closing the entity, obtain a proper plan for liabilities, distributions, bank accounts and the applicable liquidation/strike-off process.
The file to take with you
Keep passports and complete travel records; immigration grants and renewals; employment and contribution statements; bank records; original asset purchases and valuations; company registers, contracts and financial statements; and the departure/arrival advice for both jurisdictions. A dated explanation of what changed will be more useful years later than a collection of unrelated forms.
