Choose permission for the life you intend to lead
The first distinction is between permission to live and permission to work. The department describes permanent residence as a lifetime status unless revoked, but the right granted may be residence and/or work. Annual nonworking residence and a homeowner permit should not be treated as general business-operating permission.
The options below describe the legal and administrative landscape. Their presence in the research library does not mean Offshore Capitalist offers an application service for each route.
The principal routes side by side
| Route | Core basis | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Economic permanent residence | At least BSD 1m qualifying real estate or Central Bank zero-coupon bonds; minimum ten-year holding period. | Read the grant for work rights; not a passport programme. |
| Permit to reside | A nonworking stay, including relevant independent-resource, student and dependant situations. | Separate family applications and ongoing support evidence can be required. |
| Homeowner resident permit | Habitable Bahamian property and a primary home outside The Bahamas. | A seasonal-home route; ownership does not automatically confer employment rights. |
| Annual work permit | Employment or other approved work extending beyond ninety days. | Employer, role, labour-market and professional requirements apply. |
| Resident spouse permit | Qualifying spouse of a Bahamian during the initial marriage period. | Specific right to reside and work; subsisting marriage/cohabitation evidence matters. |
| Permanent residence through family/service | Bahamian spouse after five years; specified long-service occupations and other statutory/administrative categories. | Eligibility periods vary by category; time as a visitor is not a universal qualifying route. |
What the economic investment does and does not purchase
The immigration department currently specifies a BSD 1m minimum investment and a ten-year hold for either the real-estate or Central Bank zero-coupon bond route. The capital commitment is separate from processing, legal, property and ongoing costs.
The investment supports a permanent-residence application. It does not itself confer citizenship, establish a universal tax-residence result or guarantee a particular form of work permission. The home’s property-tax classification may also depend on whether the eventual permission includes gainful employment.
Family members: route-specific rather than one age table
| Issue | What it means |
|---|---|
| Spouse | The permit-to-reside guidance calls for separate applications. Economic PR requires family civil documents, but the public checklist does not establish one universal dependant-age entitlement. |
| Child under eighteen on the nonworking route | Separate application and relationship/custody evidence; school information and consent may be relevant. |
| Adult child or parent | Do not assume inclusion solely because financially dependent. Assess an independent route or obtain a route-specific determination. |
| Unmarried or same-sex partner | No automatic spouse entitlement is established in the cited guidance. The Marriage Act does not recognise same-sex domestic marriage; independent permissions may be necessary. |
| Adopted child or blended family | Legal parentage, adoption registration, custody and any required other-parent consent must be documented. |
Working in a company you own still needs permission
The annual work-permit process concerns the role being performed, not just the nationality of the company’s owner. The employer normally supplies a labour certificate of vacancy and recruitment evidence, subject to the department’s stated category exceptions.
An investor planning to run the business from Nassau should resolve this before incorporation, staffing and bank onboarding are treated as complete. Immigration, business licence and economic-substance requirements answer different questions about the same operation.
The July 2026 trusted-traveller provision is narrow
The 2026 immigration amendment creates a short work-permission exemption for defined trusted-traveller activities lasting no more than three days. The categories include specified conference participants, non-executive directors without day-to-day functions and qualifying senior professionals attending business meetings.
It is not a general digital-nomad permission, an exemption for organising a conference or an unlimited right to work remotely. The activity, duration and category must all fit the statutory provision.
Documents and timing that commonly determine the schedule
Civil records and authentication can take longer to obtain than the application form itself. The PR checklist has short medical validity, a separate police-certificate window and requirements for English translations and apostille or legalisation.
Where annual residence or work guidance says to inquire after eight to twelve weeks, that is a follow-up instruction rather than a published promise of approval within that period. First-time applicants must also respect the outside-country filing/processing requirement where the route guidance specifies it.
Residence is not the final step in a relocation
Build banking, schools, insurance, payroll and property obligations into the implementation plan. Permanent status may be long-lasting, but the company, household and financial institutions still need an accurate picture of what you do and where you live.
Citizenship has separate constitutional and statutory rules, including residence calculations, discretionary decisions and restrictions on multiple nationality. An investment-residence description should never substitute for that analysis.
