Document checklist
Track your preparation in this browser. Final requirements depend on the route and filing authority.
The employer, the role and the worker all matter
The annual work-permit route is for work exceeding ninety days. The department has a separate short-term process for shorter work. The assessment is tied to the actual role, employer and worker rather than simply to ownership of a Bahamian company.
An internationally owned business needs to connect the immigration file with its business licence, staffing plan and financial operation. A local company registration alone is not permission for its owner to perform day-to-day work.
Recruitment and the labour certificate
The ordinary checklist calls for a labour certificate of vacancy and newspaper advertising on three consecutive days. The department states exceptions for specified higher permit scales, including certain top-level and owner-representative/consultant categories. Classify the position before assuming an exception.
For scale-eight domestic positions, the published policy requires the labour certificate for new and renewal applications from September 2025 and every two years. The applicant should not substitute a generic executive checklist for the requirements of a domestic role.
Build a complete employer file
| Issue | What it means |
|---|---|
| Employer identity | Business licence and relevant incorporation/incumbency records. |
| Employment | Role, remuneration, contract or offer, qualifications and employment references. |
| Labour process | Required vacancy certificate and advertising evidence unless the precise exception applies. |
| NIB | Employer registration/compliance evidence requested by the department. |
| Regulated occupation | Approval or registration from the appropriate professional body where required. |
Build the worker and family file
The worker needs the prescribed identity, medical, background and qualifications evidence. A spouse or child accompanying the worker should be assessed under the appropriate dependant permission rather than assumed to share the worker’s authorisation.
A spouse intending to take a job needs a separate work-right analysis. For a child, prepare school, parentage and custody records early. One person’s work approval does not resolve every member of a relocating family.
Do not confuse short meetings with ordinary employment
The July 2026 trusted-traveller amendment exempts tightly defined activities for no more than three days. It is not a replacement for an annual work permit for someone managing operations from Nassau.
Conference participation, an eligible non-executive board meeting and a permanent operational role are different activities. The decision should follow what will actually happen during the visit, not the job title alone.
Application cost and government timing
The annual-work checklist publishes a BSD 200 non-refundable processing fee and a BSD 10 application stamp. The substantive permit fee depends on the applicable category; those filing items should not be described as the total government cost.
The department’s eight-to-twelve-week contact instruction is a follow-up interval, not a promise of approval. Respect the stated first-time outside-country requirement and do not begin work merely because an application has been submitted.
Payroll and employment costs after approval
Permission to work is only one employer obligation. Ordinary NIB contributions are 4.65% employee and 6.65% employer, with the July 2026 insurable earnings ceilings. Employment-law requirements on working hours, leave and termination also affect the cost of the role.
The worker’s net salary and the employer’s total cost therefore differ even without a general personal income-tax deduction. Keep the payroll category and benefit status current when the worker’s circumstances change.
Renewal needs an accurate operating picture
Retain the permit, role description, payroll and recruitment records. A changed employer, occupation or working arrangement should be reviewed before assuming the existing permission covers it.
This guide explains the route rather than advertising an unconfirmed application product. A wider business implementation plan should connect permissions, licensing, banking and the actual substance of the operation.
