The next country can be the larger tax event

The Bahamas does not have a general personal income-tax system or an identified general personal deemed-disposal departure charge. That does not mean departure is tax-neutral overall. The destination may bring worldwide income, investment gains, reporting of foreign accounts and foreign-company attribution into scope.

Prepare the destination calculation while the move is still a proposal. A sale before arrival and a sale after arrival may be treated differently, and immigration permission is not always the date on which tax residence begins.

Preserve the purchase history of investments

The absence of Bahamian CGT does not create a universal replacement cost for the next country. Preserve acquisition dates, lots, reinvested distributions, share reorganisations and any departure-tax documents from a previous jurisdiction.

A broker’s transfer statement may contain only the value on transfer. Keep the underlying history separately and obtain arrival-date valuations where useful, without assuming that the destination will use those valuations as tax cost.

Update exchange-control status through the correct channel

The Central Bank publishes an intending-emigrant process. This is an exchange-control procedure concerned with residence and assets, distinct from an income-tax departure return.

Assemble evidence of permission to reside at the destination and a clear asset inventory. Explain what will remain in Bahamian accounts or property and which funds will be transferred. The exact permissions depend on the person’s existing exchange-control classification.

Do not let a bank account tell an outdated residence story

Notify banks and brokers of changed addresses and tax-residence information, including relevant controlling persons for entities. Keep documentary support for the move. An unchanged residence card does not justify continuing a self-certification that no longer describes the facts.

The 2026 CRS guidance and investment-residence notice make this especially relevant where a person has held multiple residence permissions. Bank access and reporting classification should be resolved together rather than by silently retaining an old mailing address.

Property kept after departure has continuing costs

A home retained for personal use, rented to tenants or left vacant may have different tax and administrative consequences. The July 2026 property-tax categories make the identity and status of each owner relevant. A move should trigger a fresh classification review rather than an assumption that last year’s treatment persists.

If the property supported economic permanent residence, the department’s minimum ten-year holding requirement also belongs in the decision to sell. The residence condition and the property-tax liability are different obligations.

Companies and staff do not disappear when the owner leaves

Identify who will direct the company, perform its core activities and manage staff after departure. A company claiming Bahamian substance may no longer have the same operating facts. The owner’s new location may create another country’s management or permanent-establishment concerns.

Complete outstanding payroll and business filings and record any changes to authorised signatories. An entity with little activity can still have reporting and registered-office duties; closing an account is not the same as closing the legal entity.

Separate permanent status, annual permission and future visits

A permanent-residence certificate is issued for life unless revoked, but the rights and conditions on the grant remain important. Annual permissions have their own expiry and renewal requirements. Do not assume that a departure automatically cancels every document, or that every retained document permits future work.

Keep copies of approvals and the basis on which they were issued. For return visits, use the permission appropriate to the visit’s purpose, particularly if work rather than tourism is intended.
