From route selection to a functioning home
The sequence below is a planning workflow. Government decision times are separate; no approval date is promised.
01Establish the route and work rightsBefore property or employment commitments
Match the intended stay and work to a permit, including a separate position for each family member.
Documents & evidence
- Passport and family inventory
- Description of work and income
- Assuming a nonworking permit permits active local work
- Treating a property purchase as permission to reside
02Prepare and authenticate the fileBefore filing; allow for issuing authorities
Collect civil records and background evidence, then schedule the short-validity medical certificate.
Documents & evidence
- Birth/marriage records
- Police certificates
- Medical certificate
- Translations and authentication
- Medical certificate older than the applicable thirty-day filing window
- Missing custody consent
03Submit and maintain lawful statusDecision period varies; department follow-up is not a service guarantee
Submit the appropriate route application and satisfy first-time outside-country requirements where applicable.
Documents & evidence
- Application and receipt
- Current status evidence
- Entering to work before permission
- Reading an eight-to-twelve-week inquiry interval as approval assurance
04Activate the household arrangementsOnce permission and practical dates are established
05Establish financial and employer administrationBefore relying on payments or starting payroll
Complete bank due diligence, currency classification and relevant employer registrations.
Documents & evidence
- Funds evidence
- Bank self-certifications
- Employer/NIB documents
- Using an unapproved resident FX account arrangement
- Confusing employee contribution with total employer cost
Start with work, family and the intended length of stay
A move can fail operationally even when the tax calculation looks attractive. A person who wants to work actively, a financially independent resident and a seasonal homeowner need different permissions. Write down the actual working pattern before choosing an application.
Include the whole household in that decision. A spouse’s right to live does not necessarily include employment, and a child’s school place does not substitute for immigration permission. Adult children need their own route analysis rather than an assumption that they remain dependants indefinitely.
Make an evidence file before making irreversible commitments
| Issue | What it means |
|---|---|
| Identity and civil status | Current passports, full birth and marriage records, divorce/death records where relevant and a consistent name history. |
| Children | Birth/parentage documents, custody orders and parental consent where needed, school evidence and separate applications where required. |
| Background checks | Route-specific police certificates, medical certificate and references; sequence short-validity documents close to filing. |
| Financial position | Evidence of income, assets and funds that can be explained from source through transfer. A balance alone may not establish origin. |
| Property or employment | Conveyance and tax evidence for property routes; sponsor, role, qualifications and labour process for work. |
Schedule documents around their validity
The permanent-residence checklist requires a medical certificate dated within thirty days of submission and police certificates issued within six months, covering the required residence history. Police certificates are required from age fourteen on that checklist. Translation, apostille or legalisation requirements can add dependencies before submission.
Order long-lead civil records first. Leave the medical appointment until the application file is otherwise close to ready. If one family member’s records are delayed, identify which certificates would need refreshing rather than filing an inconsistent packet.
Choose a home around the weekly journey
For a Nassau household, place school, work, airport and regular medical needs on the same map. A coastal view is a daily benefit, but so is a manageable school run. Paradise Island involves a bridge connection; western school and airport journeys differ from an Eastern Road base.
Use a scouting stay to visit the specific property during the hours you would travel. Record air-conditioning condition, water storage, backup electricity, storm shutters and what the lease says about maintenance and storm damage. These are practical due-diligence questions, not an assertion that all homes provide the same resilience.
Arrange healthcare and schools independently of the permit
National Health Insurance enrolment has its own legal-residence and documentary requirements. Eligibility for its primary-care programme is not a promise of comprehensive private hospital or overseas medical cover. A family with specialist needs should arrange the relevant care pathway and insurance before arrival.
International schools request academic records and admissions evidence; availability and assessment matter. Obtain an actual offer and fee schedule for the child’s age rather than treating proximity to a school as a reserved place.
Prepare for banking and currency controls
Prepare a source-of-funds narrative supported by tax filings, financial statements, employment or sale records as appropriate. The bank will also need beneficial-owner information for entities and the correct tax-residence self-certifications.
Tell the bank whether funds are household savings, business revenue or an investment subscription. A foreign-currency account for a resident business has a regulatory purpose and cannot simply be treated as a substitute for every Bahamian-dollar transaction.
Keep departure and arrival records together
The old-country departure analysis can depend on retained homes, family, work, company decisions and dates of travel. A Bahamian certificate records one part of the move; the broader evidence shows what actually changed.
Keep an asset schedule with original purchase dates and costs, even when the Bahamas does not generally tax private gains. Record changes to brokerage addresses and tax self-certifications consistently, rather than replacing the old address on only some accounts.
Build an ongoing calendar
Annual permits need renewals; permanent status does not remove conditions attached to it. A company may have business licence, payroll, VAT, substance and other reporting duties. The household may have property tax, insurance renewals and school re-enrolment.
Allocate ownership of each task and retain submission receipts. A family and business can otherwise accumulate several different definitions of residence, address and financial activity across their files.
