Document checklist

A route for a stay that does not involve employment
The permit to reside is an immigration route for a purpose other than working. The department’s categories include independent-resource applicants, students and dependants. A person planning to take a local role or actively run a business should resolve the work permission separately.
This can be a useful route to consider before making a substantial permanent-residence investment, but it should be assessed on its own terms. It does not automatically accumulate a passport entitlement or provide an unlimited right to remain.
Applicant and household eligibility
| Issue | What it means |
|---|---|
| Independent applicant | Document the nonworking purpose and financial ability to support the stay. |
| Spouse | Submit the separate application and relationship evidence required by the guidance. |
| Child under eighteen | Separate application with birth/custody and relevant consent and school evidence. |
| Adult child or other relative | Do not infer inclusion from the under-eighteen dependant guidance; establish a separate basis. |
| Partner whose marriage is not recognised | An automatic spouse route is not established. Assess independent permission before relying on a joint move. |
Financial evidence should show continuing support
A current balance is part of the file, but the department also needs to understand the ability to sustain the proposed stay. Bank or professional financial evidence should explain the resources available to the applicant and household.
Prepare a realistic budget for accommodation, transport, healthcare, school and travel. The route has no invented universal income threshold in this guide; the official evidence requirements are not the same thing as a published minimum salary.
First-time applicants and the decision period
The official guidance requires first-time applicants to remain outside The Bahamas during processing. Entering as a visitor should not be treated as a way to disregard that requirement or begin work.
The instruction to contact the department after eight to twelve weeks is a follow-up point, not a guaranteed issue time. Keep the submission receipt and a record of any request for further information; one missing document can affect the practical schedule.
The document checklist is a family exercise
- Complete the appropriate application and letter explaining the purpose of residence.
- Prepare current identity, photographs and the required medical/background evidence.
- Supply financial support documents and accommodation information requested for the file.
- For children, include parentage, custody and consent evidence and the school information where relevant.
- Authenticate and translate foreign records in the prescribed form rather than submitting informal summaries.
Costs, renewal and changes in circumstances
Budget the current government application and permit charges separately from professional work and the cost of obtaining documents. No unverified all-in fee or government decision estimate is asserted here.
An annual permission needs its own renewal plan and updated financial/personal information. A change from independent residence to working, a child reaching adulthood or a changed relationship can require a new assessment rather than simply reusing last year’s file.
School and healthcare remain separate applications
A school place, residence approval and National Health Insurance enrolment are different decisions. Obtain the school’s offer and understand health-coverage eligibility and exclusions before making arrival dates dependent on them.
Keep private cover or other arrangements appropriate to the household during any gap. Access to the NHI primary-care programme should not be read as comprehensive cover for every hospital or overseas treatment cost.
Connect residence with the wider financial plan
Use the period before moving to resolve the old-country departure position, bank due diligence and exchange-control classification. A nonworking permit can be appropriate immigration permission without proving the end of residence somewhere else.
The country guides explain these interactions. This programme is included for research completeness; support availability and scope are not assumed from its inclusion.
