A serious option with practical requirements
Korean banking can be useful for local business, investment or a personal connection to the country. Suitability depends on residency, the account’s purpose, currencies, transfer requirements and access arrangements. It should not be ranked as universally better than Singapore, Hong Kong or the UAE; each serves different operating needs.
Local identity and onboarding matter
The Financial Services Commission has announced use of mobile foreigner residence cards at participating banks for eligible registered foreign residents. This does not imply that all banks open all products remotely for nonresidents. Confirm the institution’s current identity, residency and account-purpose requirements before travelling or transferring funds.
Business and investment banking
InvestKOREA’s incorporation process involves foreign-investment notification and banking steps as well as company registration. A capital transfer for a foreign-invested business can therefore require a different process from an ordinary personal deposit. Document the investor, remittance route, ownership and intended capital use, and coordinate the bank with the incorporation workstream.
Protection is product-specific
Official government guidance states that the deposit-protection limit increased to KRW100 million from 1 September 2025 for covered financial institutions. Eligibility and aggregation rules still matter. Confirm the covered institution and product rather than assuming every investment sold by a bank is an insured deposit. Test international transfers, local authentication, language support and continuity after a change of residence.
Prepare for the life of the account
Ask how address changes, tax-residence declarations, signatory changes and supporting documents are handled. Consider the currencies and jurisdictions of counterparties as part of the initial match. We can review the banking requirement and coordinate appropriate assistance where a suitable route is available. Approval depends on the institution and case; an attractive jurisdiction alone is not an account-opening strategy.
Prepare for a domestic-use account, not a generic offshore promise
Invest Korea’s guidance asks foreign applicants to present identification and evidence of the purpose of transactions, normally through a bank visit. A residence card can make identity and local-address verification more straightforward. Before the card is issued, a passport and additional residence evidence may be needed. Acceptance of a hotel address should be confirmed with the branch rather than assumed.
A salary account, a foreign-investment capital account and a personal account for daily expenses have different evidence. For wages, an employment certificate, contract or payroll/tax records can explain the purpose. Limited-function accounts may be used where the transaction purpose has not been sufficiently established; supplying the evidence later can be relevant to lifting limits. The fact that an account number exists does not mean every transfer function is available.
Foreign investment should follow the correct notification and remittance path
Where the funds are an investment into a Korean business, coordinate the foreign-investment notification, remittance and registration requirements before sending the money. Preserve evidence that the named investor owned and transferred the funds, and obtain the relevant bank records. A transfer routed or labelled incorrectly can create unnecessary difficulty when proving investment or applying for an investor-related residence status.
Separate the company’s money from the founder’s personal living costs. Prepare the incorporation and business-registration records, authority to open the account, ownership information and the purpose of each account. Ask the bank which foreign-exchange documents are required for the particular capital contribution, loan, dividend or outward transfer. Do not treat all inbound money as interchangeable simply because it arrives in the same currency.
Check access, reporting and maintenance before relying on the account
Confirm the available mobile and internet banking, authentication method, local telephone requirements, transfer ceilings and support for the intended international payments. Name formatting should be consistent across the passport, residence card, telephone registration and bank record. A small mismatch can become an operational problem when identity systems need to reconcile the same customer.
The bank also needs an accurate tax-residence self-certification. Invest Korea’s guidance distinguishes evidence for Korean and foreign tax residents, including overseas tax identifiers and addresses. Immigration status and tax residence should therefore be reviewed separately. Keep current identification and contact details, retain payment-purpose evidence and discuss continued account access before leaving Korea. We do not promise remote nonresident opening or a fixed bank decision period; suitability depends on the applicant, bank and intended activity.
