Naturalisation is a settlement process

The Korean government’s practical-law guidance describes general naturalisation with requirements including at least five years of residence, the requisite residence status, adulthood, good conduct, means of support and integration. The exact route matters: family links and special cases can use different provisions. A work visa or an investment alone does not guarantee nationality.

Integration and evidence

Language, knowledge of Korean society and the applicable comprehensive assessment or interview can be important. Compile identity, immigration, address, livelihood, family and character evidence under the current checklist. Residence history must be consistent with official records; a nominal address does not establish an actual qualifying life in the country.

Existing nationality and family consequences

Korea’s dual-nationality framework contains conditions and exceptions that need a dedicated review. Avoid assuming that a successful adult applicant can retain another nationality without further steps. Military-service and nationality-choice issues can be especially significant for families with Korean descent or male children. Obtain specific advice before taking an irreversible step.

A practical decision before an application

Consider whether the household intends to live and integrate in Korea and how its business operates internationally. Tax residence, foreign assets and corporate control remain separate from naturalisation. Application preparation should identify the actual route and evidence gaps before estimating time and cost; no universal approval date or automatic citizenship entitlement is offered here.

Choose general, facilitated or special naturalisation first

The general route requires at least five years of residence, a status permitting permanent residence, adulthood, good conduct, means of support and basic language and social knowledge. Five years on any series of entry stamps is not a complete qualification. Lawful entry, registration and the rules for counting residence need to be checked.

The government describes facilitated routes for certain family connections and marriage. For a continuing marriage to a Korean citizen, the published alternatives include two years of residence while married, or a three-year marriage with at least one year of Korean residence; specified disrupted-marriage and child-care cases have additional rules. Special naturalisation covers certain parentage, merit or exceptional-ability cases. Investment or incorporation alone is not listed as a universal citizenship purchase route.

Build evidence of a qualifying life and resolve nationality obligations

Prepare the route-specific identity, family, residence and livelihood evidence. Reconcile immigration registration with the travel history and explain any periods abroad under the relevant continuity provisions. The assessment may involve language and society knowledge, comprehensive evaluation and interview requirements, subject to the applicable exemptions. A professional file cannot substitute for a required personal qualification.

Review renunciation or any permitted foreign-nationality non-exercise undertaking under the exact category. Korea’s exceptions should not be presented as unrestricted adult dual nationality. Families with Korean ancestry or male children should also establish existing nationality and military-service implications before treating naturalisation as the only issue. No universal decision period has been verified here; preparation, assessment, authorisation and any subsequent nationality duties should be tracked separately. A household seeking a lightly used travel document may find the settlement and integration commitments inconsistent with its actual plans.
