A local account can solve a specific problem
Someone living in Panama may need everyday payments, property expenses or investment evidence. An international business may instead need collections, treasury or cross-border payments. These are different account uses and may fit different institutions.
Banking in Panama does not make funds anonymous or determine their tax treatment. The relevant institution will examine the customer, beneficial owners, source of funds and expected activity.
Match the file to the bank’s requirements
The banking regulator’s due-diligence framework and each institution’s policies shape onboarding. Simplified accounts have limited eligibility and transaction conditions; they should not be presented as a general solution for a nonresident business.
Prepare current identity and address evidence, accurate tax-residence information and the source and intended use of funds. For a company, ownership, authority, financial records and the commercial explanation should agree with each other.
Consider the operating experience
- Will the account receive the currencies and payment types your customers use?
- Are the countries and business activities within the bank’s appetite?
- What documents and visits are required at opening and later reviews?
- What are the foreign-exchange, wire, minimum-balance and account costs?
- Who can approve transactions, and what happens when a signatory is unavailable?
An immigration deposit is still a banking exposure
A fixed deposit made for residence ties up capital under programme and bank terms. Compare access restrictions, institution risk, investment maintenance and the evidence required for the residence application. Do not confuse a qualifying deposit with a government guarantee of the money.
The September 2026 Qualified Investor changes distinguish an additional option involving specified public banks from older general deposit summaries. Confirm the exact institution, amount and term before sending funds.
Our approach
We assess the banking requirement alongside the business and residence plan, check suitable available routes and help prepare a coherent application. An account should support the way you actually operate. If another jurisdiction is a better match, there is no reason to force Panama into the role.
An investor deposit must meet both immigration and bank conditions
For the September 2026 Qualified Investor public-bank alternative, MICI names Banco Nacional de Panamá and Caja de Ahorros and a B/.500,000 minimum. That does not turn any deposit at any Panamanian bank into the same route. The older general programme’s deposit option and the Friendly Nations deposit have different amounts and terms.
Before funding, obtain a written description of the product, holder, encumbrance restrictions, maturity, early-withdrawal consequences and required certificate. Separate the commercial return and institution exposure from the immigration eligibility. Account approval and residence approval are distinct decisions.
Business onboarding should explain the entire payment chain
A company should be able to show who ultimately owns and controls it, what it sells, where the work occurs and why Panama is involved. Prepare incorporation and authority records with accounts, contracts, expected turnover and transaction countries. Evidence should be consistent across documents and the public business website.
The regulator’s simplified-account framework is limited in scope and should not be treated as a universal shortcut for an international company. A complex nonresident ownership chain, third-party payments or a regulated activity can require a fuller review by the chosen institution.
Consider resilience and continuing evidence
Ask how international wires, user permissions, payment approvals, cards and accounting exports operate in practice. Check costs for the expected currencies and transaction sizes. A low advertised account fee can be less relevant than a poor exchange rate or a payment route that cannot serve the business’s counterparties.
Keep source-of-funds and transaction records current after opening. Changes in residence, ownership, industry or countries served should be reflected accurately in the bank file. A backup payment arrangement is useful where delayed access would interrupt suppliers or payroll, but each account needs a legitimate commercial purpose and its own maintenance.
