Separate the reasons to live here from the legal route
Austria can be a long-term home, a skilled-employment destination or a base for a substantive business. The appropriate immigration route depends on what the person will do. Financially independent residence expressly excludes gainful activity, while the self-employed key-worker route looks for economic benefit beyond the business owner’s own return.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens use a different residence framework from third-country nationals. Neither nationality group should confuse address registration with tax residence. A usable home and actual work can create consequences before a family has completed every administrative appointment.
Four decisions to resolve before committing
Country comparisons become useful when they reflect the actual person and company. Austria’s 23% corporate rate, 27.5% ordinary securities-income rate and progressive salary scale describe different bases; combining them without knowing how money reaches the owner can produce a misleading budget.
| Question | Practical consequence |
|---|---|
| Will you work? | Choose a permission authorising the activity, not merely a right to reside. |
| What assets arrive? | Preserve original costs and document market values where Austrian taxing rights begin. |
| Who controls the business? | Review the real location of management and any corporate CFC position. |
| What is the longer-term plan? | Compare settlement, nationality conditions and the cost of giving up another citizenship. |
An arrival benefit does not eliminate departure obligations
The securities arrival-basis rule can be valuable where Austrian taxing rights arise, but it has asset-specific and return-move qualifications. Later restriction of those rights can trigger exit taxation. New 2026 proof requirements mean a departure file may remain active well after the move.
The personal and corporate tax guides explain those mechanics separately. An investor, an employee with shares and a founder transferring business functions should not be given the same checklist merely because they all have an overseas address.
Family planning needs ages, activities and nationality history
The ordinary family definition includes spouses and registered partners aged at least 21 when applying and unmarried children under 18. Work access and language conditions depend on the actual title. A child approaching adulthood can need a separate plan well before the main applicant’s renewal.
Austria substantially restricts multiple citizenship on ordinary naturalisation, while descent and specific statutory routes have exceptions. That is a decision to understand at the start of a long-term move, not after years spent assuming every passport can be retained.
Bring the complete situation to the discussion
A useful initial brief identifies nationality, family ages, expected work, current homes, controlled companies, portfolio values and any planned sale. Include the willingness to live in Austria, rather than treating the residence permit as an end in itself.
Offshore Capitalist can help compare the connected tax, business and relocation questions and define the implementation work required. The agreed scope should state which local applications, opinions and ongoing filings are included and who will perform them.
