Choose the route around real activity

For EU/EEA and Swiss citizens, qualifying free-movement residence and registration rules are the starting point. Third-country nationals instead need the appropriate permit for a longer stay. Lawful visa-free presence is not the same as permission to work or remain while an application is pending.

The financially independent settlement title excludes gainful activity. Someone continuing to run client work or an overseas business actively from Austria should resolve work authorisation rather than assuming foreign invoices make the activity passive.

Compare the principal routes

The table identifies relevant starting options. Each route has additional eligibility and documentation; it is not an exhaustive immigration catalogue or a promise of approval.

Understand the financial-independence calculation

The 2026 published monthly reference figures are €2,616.78 for a single person, €4,128.24 for a married couple or registered partners, and €403.76 extra for each child. They belong to this specific title and are not the lower general residence reference amounts.

The authority also examines accommodation, health insurance and the sustainability of the resources. Separate recurring pensions or asset income from a speculative plan to earn after arrival. Buying property does not replace the quota or support conditions, and the permit is not citizenship by investment.

Build a complete family and document file

For ordinary NAG family cases, spouses and registered partners must be at least 21 when applying; unmarried children must be under 18. EU free-movement cases have separate family rules. Obtain birth, marriage, adoption, custody and divorce records with required translations and authentication.

Pre-entry A1 German can be required for specified titles, subject to exemptions and sponsor-specific exceptions. Do not assume one adult’s exemption covers the whole family. A recognised same-sex marriage or registered partnership can meet the relevant relationship category; an informal relationship does not automatically do so.

Three registrations should not be confused

Address registration normally follows taking accommodation and must be completed within three days. Qualifying EU/EEA/Swiss residents staying longer than three months must also request the appropriate registration certificate within four months of entry. Third-country residence permission uses its own procedure.

Tax residence follows the home and habitual-stay rules, while social insurance follows the applicable work or coverage rules. A Meldezettel does not by itself establish that immigration, payroll and tax obligations have all been satisfied.

Budget the first year and the next renewal

Allow for housing deposits, insurance, translations, official charges, travel and local professional work separately from support-income requirements. The federal portal currently lists a €218 application fee for temporary settlement titles; that is a government fee, not an all-inclusive service price.

Ordinary settlement permissions generally start at one year. The published route framework allows a three-year title after the relevant two years of continuous lawful settlement and Module 1 integration conditions; five years plus the further conditions can open long-term EU residence. These stages are distinct from citizenship, which ordinarily requires a longer record.
