An additional home option with a financial commitment

Antigua and Barbuda offers citizenship through qualifying investment or contribution, alongside ordinary nationality routes. The practical value depends on what the nationality adds to the passports and residence rights your family already holds.

A family that values a potential Caribbean home, easier travel on specific routes or a second nationality may assess it differently from a single applicant seeking one additional visa waiver. Start with those purposes before comparing prices.

Compare the routes and the whole family

The official programme lists the National Development Fund, approved property, a qualifying business investment and a University of the West Indies fund option. The contribution, recoverable asset exposure, fees and eligibility differ.

Family composition matters. Children’s ages, dependency, parents and future additions can change both eligibility and cost. A property investment also requires its own commercial assessment; programme approval does not establish rental performance or a ready resale market.

Travel access has limits

The current official lists identify Schengen short-visit visa exemption and UK ETA eligibility, subject to conditions. The country is not a U.S. Visa Waiver Program member. None of these visitor arrangements is a right to live or work in Europe, the UK or the United States.

A July 2026 government statement describes EU pressure concerning investment citizenship and future visa access. That does not establish that access has already ended; it does make lifetime promises about visa waivers inappropriate.

Citizenship and the tax plan

Buying citizenship does not terminate residence in the country where you live, nor does it transfer company management. Anyone intending to live or operate in Antigua and Barbuda needs a separate local tax and business review.

The programme has presence and other continuing conditions. Confirm the enacted rules applying to the application and future renewals, rather than relying on an old brochure. We can help compare the citizenship decision with the family’s wider international plan and coordinate the agreed application support.

Citizenship options have different economic commitments

The NDF contribution begins at USD 230,000 and is not returned. Approved property begins at USD 300,000 with a five-year holding requirement. An eligible standalone business investment begins at USD 1.5 million; joint investment needs at least USD 5 million in total and USD 400,000 per participant. These routes should be compared for both legal suitability and commercial risk.

For larger families, the UWI fund is specifically designed for six or more qualifying people, with USD 260,000 including processing for six. The family definition and ages can therefore change which route has the best economics. Start with a complete family map rather than choose the lowest advertised principal-only price.

Budget for due diligence, documents and continuing obligations

The CIU fee schedule distinguishes the contribution or investment, processing, age-dependent due diligence and passport charges. Main-applicant due diligence is USD 8,500, spouse due diligence USD 5,000 and the passport fee USD 300 per person. The final budget also needs professional work, medical evidence, police records, certification and travel.

NDF applicants initially pay due diligence and ten percent of processing, with the approved contribution and remaining amounts following the decision. Keep available liquidity for that later stage rather than commit all funds to a property or portfolio that may be difficult to liquidate quickly.

The absence of personal income tax is not a business exemption

Antigua’s revenue authority records the abolition of personal income tax and PAYE in June 2016. It separately administers corporate income tax, unincorporated business tax, sales tax, property taxes and other charges. The owner’s personal position and the business’s obligations therefore need separate analysis.

A company operating in Antigua can need local tax registration and returns even when the shareholder obtained citizenship through investment. The corporate registration guidance asks for incorporation, ownership and director information and identifies circumstances in which a nonresident company doing local business must file. A foreign company is not automatically outside the system.

A real operating business needs a compliance calendar

The IRD corporate-payment guidance describes monthly instalments and a balance due within three months after the taxation year ends. A company should maintain books that support revenue, expenses, connected-party payments and amounts distributed to the owner. Product and industry licences and employment obligations require their own review.

If the owner manages another country’s company while living in Antigua, examine the consequences in both jurisdictions. Citizenship does not supply a decision-making location by itself. Document where strategy, contracts and operations are actually controlled before relying on a foreign-management arrangement.

A family move requires more than programme presence

The CIU’s public page still states five days in the first five calendar years, while 2026 changes require confirmation of the operative rule for a new case. Whatever minimum applies to citizenship maintenance, it is a different question from establishing a home and ending residence elsewhere.

Visit the intended neighbourhood, assess schools and healthcare for the actual family and review transport and banking requirements. Keep a durable civil-document file for children and future family additions. A right to belong is valuable, but the practical move must work for the people using it.

Use passport access as a journey-specific comparison

The current UK ETA route and Schengen short-visit waiver are useful only within their permitted activities, duration and entry conditions. They do not authorise a move or local employment. US travel needs its own visa and current entry-rule review because Antigua and Barbuda is outside the Visa Waiver Program.

A sound comparison asks which journeys are currently difficult, whether the applicant qualifies for the authorisations and what permanent national rights the second citizenship adds. It should still make sense if one visa waiver changes. The citizenship and tax plan can then be implemented as related but distinct projects.
