City at a glance

Decide how much of your week belongs by the sea

The Hague can combine a central-city routine with access to Scheveningen’s coast. The practical choice is how often you need each setting and where work or school sits between them. Begin with the fixed journeys, then decide whether the home should be closer to the centre, the international offices or the beach.

Do not treat every international household as the same profile. A family seeking Dutch-language integration, a temporary posting with international schooling and an owner running a business across borders can require different homes, documents and services. Plan the move around the actual household and permission to live and work.

What may appeal

  • Central, neighbourhood and coastal living can be compared within one city.
  • Published routes exist for different registration and newcomer-school situations.
  • The city’s housing-permit guidance makes eligibility checks explicit.

What to weigh up

  • A regulated rental can be unsuitable because of income eligibility even when the rent is affordable.
  • The preferred school and office location may outweigh a beach-side preference.
  • Airport connections, doctor enrollment and household utilities still require separate planning.

Neighbourhoods & finding a home

Five places to start the comparison

NeighbourhoodWhy consider itWhat to test at the address
City centre / HofkwartierConsider this if museums, shops and central meeting places should be within the ordinary walking routine.Compare streets near nightlife with quieter internal positions. Check the final route to the rail station you actually use, rather than assuming every central address is equally convenient.
ZeeheldenkwartierLocal shops, cafés and squares provide a neighbourhood setting between a central routine and journeys toward the coast.Visit the exact street at evening and school-run times. Inspect sound insulation, bicycle storage and the practical size of the workroom.
StatenkwartierFrederik Hendriklaan’s shops and nearby cultural institutions offer a distinctive western-city shortlist, relevant for some international-office routines.Check the actual school and office locations before using the district’s international reputation as a proxy for convenience. Inspect the building, parking arrangements and full recurring costs.
RegentessekwartierOlder architecture and local streets around Regentesseplein and Weimarstraat provide another way to combine neighbourhood life with city access.Compare the block, building condition and transport connection directly. Broad labels about who lives in an area do not predict how your household will experience it.
ScheveningenA coastal home can make the beach part of normal life rather than a weekend trip. Distinguish the resort frontage from streets farther back.Test the commute in poor weather and on a busy day. Look at wind exposure, maintenance, visitor activity and how easily the household reaches its year-round services.

Check the tenancy and the right to occupy

For a new home in The Hague, establish the contract category and the legal basis of any fixed end date. Since July 2024, an indefinite agreement is the general rule for new residential tenancies, with specified exceptions. A landlord calling a home “for expats” does not itself explain which exception applies.

For contracts from July 2023, the ordinary deposit maximum is two months of basic rent. Separate the basic rent, service-cost advance and direct utilities in the paperwork. Keep an agreed inspection report and payment trail. Ask for the property’s points assessment where relevant: the regulated, midprice and liberalized categories have different rules, and the asking price alone does not determine the category.

The Hague requires an affordable housing permit for certain independent rentals. Its current guidance includes homes with 186 points or fewer, and some homes within the published rent ceiling even with more points. Income conditions apply. Check the property and household together: being able to pay the asking rent is not evidence that a high-income applicant qualifies to occupy a regulated home.

  • Confirm that the exact address can be used for the municipal registration your stay requires.
  • Verify the owner or authorized agent before paying, and inspect the actual home or appoint someone trustworthy to inspect it.
  • Get a written account of included furniture, flooring, appliances, service costs, maintenance and notice terms.

Schools & childcare

Newcomer school placement has a central entry point

The Hague’s School Finder describes newcomer primary classes for children at least six years old who do not speak Dutch, have attended a Dutch school for less than two years and live in the city. The central registration point searches for a suitable place close to the home; four- or five-year-old siblings are placed at the same school where possible. That is an aim, not a guaranteed combined placement.

Secondary newcomers aged twelve to eighteen may enter an international transition class, with language preparation before mainstream education. International education has its own intended audience and admission rules. Identify the right route, submit the complete file and keep the school journey provisional until the placement is confirmed.

Healthcare

Insurance and a local doctor are separate arrangements

Where the Dutch insurance obligation applies, take out the required policy promptly; the government gives a four-month deadline after arrival. Do not treat that as four months of free cover. Cross-border employment or telework can change the insurance position; SVB explains when an assessment is appropriate. Resolve that question for the actual work arrangement in The Hague.

Register with a local huisarts as a separate step. Practices may restrict their catchment or have no capacity, and some ask for insurance details first. Contact the insurer for help if a suitable practice is unavailable. Prepare the family’s medication and treatment information, and ask how to access care outside ordinary opening hours. A nearby hospital does not replace a functioning primary-care arrangement.

Airports & international connections

Build the airport trip around the station you will use

For Rotterdam The Hague Airport, metro E connects The Hague Centraal with Meijersplein, where passengers change to bus 33. The airport describes around 30 minutes for the metro segment from The Hague, followed by the bus; this is not a 30-minute door-to-terminal promise. Check the operating hours against the flight.

Schiphol’s official rail guide also lists The Hague among its connected cities. Compare the route from your actual station and address, including any changes and the first or last usable service. Within the city, HTM permits OVpay: check in and out with the same card or device. A phone wallet and its physical bank card are not interchangeable for completing one journey.

Public services & practical setup

For entrepreneurs, the housing-permit income evidence matters

The municipal permit page specifies income evidence, with separate requirements for self-employed applicants. It describes an accountant or bookkeeper statement covering taxable annual income and the current-year financial statement, alongside a KVK extract; a recently started business has a stated exception. A foreign business owner should ask how their particular records must be presented before relying on an eligible listing.

Establish who applies and when the permit is needed. Retain the signed tenancy or owner’s permission, the supporting income file and the application decision. The city’s income limits and rent thresholds are year-specific, so use the live check for the application rather than an older number from a property advertisement.

Select the right BRP registration route

The Hague publishes different first-registration routes for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens, people with residence permission, highly skilled migrants, students and privileged persons. Someone already holding a BSN or returning to the Netherlands may need a different route. Start from the city’s moving-and-immigration directory so that the appointment matches the household.

For the ordinary first-registration route with residence permission, the city requests identity, lawful-residence and occupancy evidence, and attendance by every registering family member. Important foreign certificates may need legalization. The published page says processing usually takes up to four weeks; it also explains when registration can use the date an appointment was made after arrival. Keep that confirmation rather than assuming the appointment date alone tells the whole story.

Set up water on the handover date

Dunea tells new customers to apply when they receive the keys so that the opening water-meter reading can be recorded. If moving within its area, closing the old account is a separate task. Keep the handover report and photographs; matching the reading to the right day helps separate the previous occupant’s use from yours.

Check the home’s energy arrangement before signing a supply contract. Gas, electricity and district heating have different practical setups. Ask which services are included in the lease and which need an individual account, then book the internet installation for the exact unit. A furnished description does not guarantee that all household services are active or included.

What residents say

These are attributed public experiences, not client testimonials. Housing, neighbourhood and household circumstances affect the experience.

A Scheveningen resident discussing nearby neighbourhoods viewed Statenkwartier and Voorburg favourably for family life. That is a local opinion, useful as a lead for a visit rather than a basis for ranking safety or predicting a school place.

Self-described resident discussing several areas; Voorburg is a separate municipality and is not treated here as a Hague neighbourhood. Public, self-selected account; the author’s identity and claims have not been independently verified. This is not a client testimonial.

A former international student described retaining friendships made after moving to The Hague, while other participants emphasized finding housing early. The social opportunity and the practical difficulty of securing a home can coexist.

Planning your move

Use a scouting visit to resolve dependencies

A useful visit includes the school route, a grocery trip, the connection to the station and time inside the home at the hours you need to work. Ask a prospective GP about enrollment and confirm any school admissions conditions. These are concrete tasks that can change the preferred neighbourhood before a lease is signed.

For an owner with international income, keep the corporate and household workstreams connected. Residence permission, BRP registration, a housing permit and tax residence each answer different questions. Agree what must be complete before the family moves, what can follow and who is accountable for the remaining steps.

Connect the household move to the business plan

A home in The Hague changes the practical centre of your life. Before committing, align the move date with personal tax residence, the work you will perform there and any business decisions you will continue making. A residence permission, municipal record or attractive lease does not settle those cross-border questions.

We can help connect the country analysis with implementation: the residence route, corporate arrangements, banking and the sequence in which the family and business move. Start with the intended daily life, but test the legal and operational consequences before expensive commitments become difficult to unwind.
