Choose the legal route, not just an investment
Citizenship Law 5901 distinguishes descent, ordinary acquisition, marriage-related acquisition and exceptional routes. Establish an existing claim through parentage before treating investment as necessary. The route determines the evidence and decision process; eligibility under one pathway does not remove the requirements of another.
Investment citizenship
The official investment agency describes a qualifying property route beginning at US$400,000 and several alternatives at US$500,000, with holding and certification conditions. A successful investment is not itself the nationality decision. Identity, family and other application requirements still have to be met. Follow the linked programme page for the implementation sequence and investment risks.
Rights, obligations and current passports
Turkish nationality should be evaluated against the family’s actual travel, residence and business needs. It is not EU citizenship and does not provide general permission to live or work throughout Europe. Check existing-nationality rules, the status of children and any military-service implications. Nationality can be useful without being a solution to every travel restriction.
Tax is a different analysis
Becoming Turkish does not itself end another country’s tax residence. Living and conducting activities in Türkiye can create local tax obligations, while nonresident citizens have a different position described in the tax authority’s guidance. Map the intended life after approval, not merely the application. Keep investment fees, professional charges and capital at risk separate when comparing programmes.
Ordinary naturalisation and marriage have independent conditions
Article 11 of Law 5901 sets out the ordinary framework, including five years of qualifying residence before application, adulthood and capacity, an intention to settle, sufficient Turkish, livelihood, conduct and security-related requirements. The residence calculation and permitted absences require review under the implementing rules. Meeting a time threshold alone is not an entitlement to citizenship.
Article 16 provides a marriage-related route after at least three years of marriage to a Turkish citizen, with continuing marriage and the other statutory conditions. Marriage itself does not automatically confer nationality. Prepare evidence of the genuine family relationship and review any exception based on death or other circumstances under the law. A child’s descent claim involves the parents’ nationality and legally established relationship at the relevant time, rather than the price of a later family investment.
The investment route changes the qualification, not the need for scrutiny
The official programme includes qualifying property from US$400,000 and several investment alternatives from US$500,000, with the applicable certification and holding conditions. The asset, lawful funds, identity and family records still need to satisfy the responsible authorities. A certificate of investment conformity and a favourable nationality decision are separate documents.
Prepare civil records early, including adoption, custody, divorce or name-change evidence where relevant. Confirm which family members can be included rather than assuming an adult child’s financial dependence is sufficient. Keep the investment’s restriction calendar after approval and retain the original banking or title evidence. No universal completion date is promised because title and bank work, document collection and nationality assessment have different dependencies. Review existing citizenship and relevant military obligations before filing. A Turkish passport gives Turkish nationality rights; it does not convert the holder into an EU citizen or remove another country’s tax claim.
