Identify what actually leaves

List the household’s homes, work arrangements, business authority and assets. Distinguish moving a person from moving a company’s actual management. A foreign address does not make a Dutch business disappear, and Dutch-source income can remain reportable after nonresident status begins.

Keep the evidence needed for the migration-year return and establish how notices, payments and digital access will continue after departure. Destination registration and Dutch tax cessation are related facts, not interchangeable decisions.

Substantial shares can create a deferred charge

The authority treats emigration of a substantial-interest holder as a deemed disposal and explains the protective assessment mechanism. For modern departures, the substantial-interest claim can last indefinitely. Deferral is not forgiveness. Later dividends, share sales or liquidation can require notification and collection.

Before leaving, establish the share basis, current value, expected distributions and whether security or a deferral application is needed for the destination. A cash-flow plan should include a scenario where the preserved claim becomes payable.

Pensions and annuities have a different preservation logic

Dutch tax-favored pension or annuity arrangements can produce protective assessments when a person leaves. The authority describes conditional ten-year treatment for specified preserved benefits, while drawing a distinction from the unlimited substantial-interest claim. A later surrender or noncompliant transaction can trigger collection.

Review the actual product, insurer, treaty and contemplated payment. Do not treat every pension transfer or commutation as equivalent to continuing an ordinary pension. Obtain the tax and product documents before requesting a transfer.

Company and destination analysis belongs before implementation

If the owner will continue directing a company, decide who will actually make decisions after the move and assess both countries’ residence/PE rules. The authority’s corporate conversion example shows why a legal-form change alone is not the same as a substantive management migration.

Compare the destination’s recognition of arrival values with the Dutch departure treatment asset by asset. We can connect that analysis to company changes, banking, contracts and a calendar for continuing Dutch filings.
