From shortlist to working account

This is a practical sequence. Identification and approval times depend on the provider and the file; no universal opening deadline is stated.

01Confirm the right productBefore travel or application+

Describe the holder, actual residence, ownership and use. Confirm accepted documents and whether your application can be handled remotely or needs an appointment.

Common complications
  • Treating consumer basic-account rights as company-account eligibility.

Choose an account that fits life in Italy

An Italian account can make rent, taxes, household payments and local business operations easier. Start with the legal account holder and the payments it must support. A personal current account, company operating account, investment account and merchant-processing contract solve different needs. An Italian IBAN alone does not identify the provider’s licence or the protection of the balance.

Look up the contracting institution in the Bank of Italy’s registers and read its terms. The important name is the regulated legal entity, which may differ from the app or commercial brand. Establish where the account is held and which authority and deposit scheme apply before transferring substantial funds.

Resident, nonresident and basic-account access

Bank of Italy guidance issued on 5 August 2026 reaffirms access to the conto di base for consumers legally staying in the EU, subject to the statutory conditions and anti-money-laundering checks. It supplies essential payment services and has fee relief for qualifying low-income customers. This consumer right does not require a bank to provide company banking, borrowing, investment services or every ordinary current-account product.

Ordinary account eligibility is provider-specific. Findomestic, for example, says some foreign nonresidents may apply but also requires domicile in Italy, specified identity or EU-registration evidence, a health card and a mobile number. That is not an unrestricted offshore-opening offer. A person living entirely abroad should obtain confirmation for their actual address and documents before travelling or relying on an online application.

Keep nationality, immigration permission, registered address, domicile and tax residence distinct. A passport or codice fiscale does not answer every one of those questions. Ask what evidence the selected channel accepts; inability to complete an app’s identification workflow need not describe the bank’s entire branch policy.

Present a coherent personal or company file

For personal applications, identity and Italian tax-code documents are common published requirements. Add the address, tax-residence declarations and income evidence requested for the particular product. For a company, prepare a current register extract, constitutional documents, ownership chain and authority for each signer. The list below is a preparation framework; the bank decides which documents and certifications it needs.

Italian due-diligence rules examine the customer, representative, beneficial owner and purpose of the relationship, with continuing monitoring. An overseas holding company adds another ownership layer to explain. Provide a simple transaction narrative: what is sold, who pays, where delivery occurs and where suppliers and owners receive money. This is more useful than an unexplained forecast labelled “international business”.

For a large initial transfer, preserve the chain from its economic origin to the sending account. A property sale may need the deed and receipt; owner funding needs a recorded capital contribution or loan. Sending-account statements show the transfer route but may not establish how the wealth was earned. Do not mix a shareholder’s home-purchase funds with customer receipts.

What deposit protection covers

FITD’s ordinary protection is €100,000 per eligible depositor per bank, aggregating covered accounts and accrued interest. Its published ordinary repayment period is seven working days after the relevant unavailability or liquidation measure takes effect. This is a bank-failure reimbursement rule, not a deadline for releasing a payment under compliance review.

Coverage can include eligible companies as well as individuals. A joint holder’s share is combined with that person’s other deposits at the same bank. Shares and bonds are not covered deposits. Identify the actual scheme: cooperative banks use a separate Italian fund, and a foreign branch may be covered by its home-country scheme. Read the depositor information sheet rather than count product brands.

For certain natural-person balances arising from residential-property transactions or specified life events, the ordinary cap does not apply for nine months. Eligibility, tracing and a specific claim are required; FITD describes a 60-day request deadline after liquidation for the excess. Do not extend this to routine company turnover or assume every property-related payment qualifies.

A payment account is not automatically a bank deposit

Payment and electronic-money institutions safeguard customer money under a different framework. Bank of Italy rules require separation of relevant funds from the institution’s own property. Safeguarding and bank-deposit compensation address different legal risks; an app, debit card or IBAN does not establish €100,000 FITD cover.

Ask who owes you the balance, whether it is a deposit or electronic money, which entity holds safeguarded funds and what happens on insolvency. Keep investment custody separate from cash protection. A useful payment provider can complement a bank, but assess its terms before using it as the only place for payroll reserves or a property completion balance.

Test the payments you will actually use

Prepare a monthly transaction sample and compare the entire cost: account charges, cards, cash handling, foreign-exchange spread, international transfer fees and any intermediary deductions. A low monthly fee can be outweighed by regular currency conversion. Confirm who can approve company payments and whether an accountant can have restricted access.

For Italian operations, ask specifically about F24 tax payments, pagoPA, SEPA direct debits, payroll files and international receipts. Availability is a product feature to verify, not something proved by holding an IBAN. Bank of Italy explains the name/IBAN verification introduced for standard and instant transfers from 9 October 2025. A successful payee check does not validate a contract or investment.

Tax reporting continues after the account opens

Expect tax-residence self-certification and tax identification numbers. EU financial-account reporting rules can also require a company’s classification and information about controlling persons. A mailing address, residence permit or passport is not a substitute for determining the correct tax position. Update the bank when facts change.

Italian tax residents retaining foreign accounts should separately review Quadro RW and IVAFE. The tax authority distinguishes monitoring exceptions from cases where IVAFE is due; neither automatically exempts bank interest or other income. Automatic reporting does not file your personal return. Keep statements, exchange-rate records and the residence chronology for your accountant.

Maintain access and resolve problems

Respond to genuine periodic-review requests and update owners, signers, activity and addresses. Before leaving Italy, ask whether the existing product permits your new residence and what must change. Test replacement authentication and card delivery before cancelling the old phone number. Keep enough operational resilience to continue essential payments during an outage or review.

Complain first in writing to the institution, preserving dates, statements and the remedy requested. Bank of Italy describes a normal 60-day response period, generally 15 working days for payment-service complaints, subject to applicable exceptions. If unresolved, check ABF jurisdiction and procedural conditions; the application contribution is €20. Its dispute process is not a promise that an ordinary commercial account must be approved.

Coordinate banking with the wider move

We can help assess the account requirements, prepare a consistent application file and coordinate banking with relocation or company implementation. Start with your residence, entity, activity, currencies and anticipated transactions. The bank retains its own acceptance decision; named providers here are evidence examples, not endorsements or claimed partners.
