Consider the whole move
Guernsey can be worth considering when you want to live on the island and can organise the household and business around that choice. Start with actual work, travel, schooling, medical needs and the properties available to your status. A tax comparison becomes useful once those requirements are clear.
For a business owner, the main planning exercise is to connect personal residence with the operating structure. Record who will take decisions, where employees and customers remain and what changes when you arrive. Avoid treating a local company and an Open Market home as if they solve every cross-border issue.
Guernsey is a distinct destination, not shorthand for every Channel Island
Jersey and Guernsey are different Crown Dependencies. Within the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark have their own legal and administrative arrangements. This profile concerns Guernsey; it does not apply the island’s housing system or personal tax assumptions to every other island.
Sark’s government describes its own housing rules and direct-tax system. Alderney-specific tax-cap decisions also exist. If either island is the intended home, begin a separate location-specific review rather than changing only the address in a Guernsey plan.
Separate the approvals and financial analysis
The most common practical mistake is using evidence for one decision as proof of another. A house may be on the Open Market without establishing your immigration eligibility. An employment permission may support occupation without determining the tax treatment of a foreign company.
| Decision | What to establish | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Immigration | Nationality, existing status and proposed work | Required permission before relocation |
| Population management / housing | The property market and permitted occupants | Certificate or permit for the actual household |
| Individual tax | Residence category and income profile | Annual analysis, elections and eligible caps |
| Company tax | Management, registration and income activities | Residence, rate, substance and foreign-country review |
| Family life | Schools, healthcare and travel | Practical availability and costs |
Test the practical constraints
Guernsey Airport, code GCI, is in Forest parish. Confirm the actual connections required for your business rather than assuming every UK or international journey is direct. Test the airport and school journeys from the address you are considering, including the days when several household members need transport.
Healthcare is funded differently from the UK NHS, and school choices should be checked with the relevant admissions body. Build the budget around the services your family will use. A reconnaissance stay is useful when it tests a normal working week rather than simply a holiday itinerary.
A workable plan assigns responsibility
Treat the move as a sequence with named owners: departure analysis, immigration, property eligibility, business design, banking, household setup and recurring administration. This makes unresolved decisions visible before they become expensive surprises.
We can help assess Guernsey against other jurisdictions and coordinate the relevant implementation. Send a concise description of your current residence, household, business and timing through the inquiry process; the team can then identify which questions need detailed analysis.
