Two systems must be satisfied
Immigration determines whether a person may enter and remain for the proposed purpose. Population management and the housing system address residence and employment on Guernsey. British or Irish nationality can simplify the first question, but the household still needs a lawful housing and population-management position.
For another nationality, have the Guernsey authorities assess the exact permission already held and the intended activity. A UK visit visa or an assumption based on travel within the Common Travel Area should not be used as proof of a right to work or settle on the island.
Open Market residence is a property-and-status route
The official relocation guide describes living in a Part A Open Market property through purchase or rental, subject to the person’s immigration position, the appropriate Open Market Resident Certificate and checks. The correct part of the register and the permitted occupiers matter; “Open Market” is not a label to apply to any home advertised for sale.
Before commitment, ask for confirmation of the property’s registration and the household’s eligibility. Record the position of a partner, dependent child, adult child and any other occupant separately. A tax cap attached to a qualifying purchase is an additional question, not a benefit automatically attached to renting.
Employment-led residence starts with the employer and role
A Local Market employment route depends on the relevant permit and its conditions. The employer’s application and the proposed job need to be considered alongside any immigration work clearance. The permission’s term, accommodation consequences and family position should be reviewed before an offer is treated as a complete relocation solution.
Ask the employer what happens if the role changes, employment ends or the family needs to move home. Keep the permit and the employment contract together, but do not assume that a contractual notice period guarantees a corresponding period of immigration or housing permission.
The Entrepreneur Visa requires an active business
Locate Guernsey’s official guide describes at least £200,000 in the applicant’s name for a new or existing Guernsey business, with a controlling or equal interest and a demonstrated economic benefit. The applicant must work full-time for the business and meet the language requirement or relevant nationality exception. Creating a new business and investing in an existing one have different detailed conditions.
This is not passive investment in exchange for citizenship. The applicant and accompanying family need the appropriate entry clearance before relocation. The guide describes Open Market accommodation and spouse/partner and dependent-child inclusion, but each family member’s documents and permission must be checked against the actual application.
Compare the practical commitments
Choose the route using the weakest dependency, not the most attractive headline. A business that cannot operate lawfully, a household that cannot occupy the proposed home, or an unresolved immigration position can each prevent the intended move.
| Route / destination | Core dependency | Before commitment |
|---|---|---|
| Open Market household | Appropriate immigration position and registered home | Confirm Part A and each occupier’s certificate |
| Employment-led Local Market | Employer, qualifying role and permit conditions | Confirm family and job-change consequences |
| Entrepreneur immigration | Active business and route-specific investment evidence | Clearance before relocation; source of funds and business viability |
| Alderney / Sark proposal | Different island-specific legal review | Do not transfer the Guernsey property rules |
Prepare a coherent application file
Collect identity and civil-status records, existing immigration decisions, an accurate address history and the evidence required for checks. A business applicant should add the investment trail, ownership structure, business plan, forecasts and explanation of the applicant’s active role. Explain material inconsistencies before submission.
The source of capital and the recurring income available for family living are different questions. Show both. Retain the approved conditions and create a reminder for changes, renewals and annual obligations so that the actual life on the island continues to match the approved position.
